Got a problem......

I took my 270 handi to the range yesterday to sight in a new scope I just mounted.
First time I've shot the gun.

One round down the tube and it's jammed shut tighter that Dick's hatband??
Factory Winchester 130 gr power point ammo.

Serial number NM 21xxxx
Gun was supposed to be low round count and appears so.
Openned and closed just fine prior to this.

Any suggestions?
How to get it open without breaking something?
What might have caused this?
Any insight at all?

When you pull the hammer back, can you see the butt end of the firing pin?

Following Bill's lead, dry fire it several times if the firing pin looks like it's forward, sometime it jams forward leaving the pin stuck in the primer which prevents it from opening, dry firing may release the pin, you may be able to work pin back from the top. Another possibility is the latch broke, wouldn't be the first time for that either. Last resort contact a repair center if you don't want to work on it yourself, you can use the trigger hone info to drop the trigger guard to remove the barrel that way.

You guys are the best, which I already knew.

Dry firing worked.
Should I now just lube it up or is there something I need to adjust/modify?

If the primer looks normal, I'd polish the pin and pin housing, you have to disassemble the trigger and hammer group to get at it tho, the top pin locks the firing pin in position, but when the hammer is back, the transfer barrel is in the way, so unless the t-bar flops back because it's worn, you have to tear it all apart to remove the pin, I use numbered drill bits and flitz by hand to polish both the small and large part of the pin housing.

You might want to replace the firing pin spring too, although a weak but functional spring will help prevent FTFs, one of Fred's fixes for FTFs is to shorten the spring. Whilst you're in there, you might as well upgrade the hammer spring with a Wolff extra power spring(FAQs) and do a trigger job too if it can use it.  Maybe apply a little dry lube or graphite to the pin housing in the mean time.

If you have never removed a firing pin from a Handi, be prepared for a quick launch when removing the retaining pin. The firing pin and spring can escape, if you aren't ready, and they have a way of hiding really well...

Had that happen on other items when you loosen or remove one item, next thing is that several items you had no clue that existed get propelled in different directions. Now find them and figure where and how they get back correctly.

Use an old 10-22 rifle trick. Put receiver in a one gallon zip-lock bag for the final pin removal. You can see what your doing and the bag will catch the parts if they junp.

That would solve half of it, putting the little beggars back is a different story.

It's not a problem on the H&R, you can hold the firing pin in and slide the retaining pin in easily, just remember to install the release lever which pivots on the same pin. The hard part is getting the latch and transfer bar installed, getting the release lever meshed with the latch correctly is critical, but the slave pin used for the trigger works makes it easy to install the assembly as a unit.
