Modified Gatofeo's lube
« on: July 29, 2010, 03:57:35 PM »
I gave up trying to find mutton tallow.  I even gave up trying to find some mutton fat and rendering my own tallow from it (directions found on the web).  So, I bought some lard (as one on-line resource called it, pig tallow), some bee's wax and paraffin and made some modified Gatofeo's lube.  I haven't been able to find anything that compared and/or contrasted lard with mutton tallow, so we'll see soon enough.  The stuff looks like it should work.  I'm waiting on my order of felt from Duro-felt, and as soon as it get's here, I'll make some wads and see how it works.

Anyone try to make the lube with lard?  How'd it work out?

Hope your lard does not have salt in it or used salt in part of the rendering process.

I read something about that before I decided to try it.  So I looked before buying, says no salt.

This is from Dixie Gun Works:

A0410 Old Zip Patch Grease   $3.50

This is a mutton tallow/beeswax combination that can be stored in either patchbox or grease hole. Withstands high temperatures without melting. It is the formula used by the likes of A.O. “Pop” Niedner, Ned Roberts, and Walter M.Cline, and by the Marlin Firearms Co. and Massachusetts Arms Co. The French, Swiss, American and British governments also used this grease to lubricate the bullets for their early black powder cartridge military firearms. The primary use today is for greasing cloth patches. Sold in 4 oz. can.

Thanks.  Was getting ready to make an order anyhow, so I'll try some of that.

A small local butcher shop was happy to give me some mutton fat scraps.  When I told them what I wanted it for the guys started talking guns with me.  A great experience.

I cubed it small, boiled it a lot, strained it through some panty hose material, let it cool and lifted off some beauty white, fairly firm, tallow.  Got the procedure from a BACKWOODSMAN magazine about a year ago.
