ignition problems
« on: November 19, 2010, 04:51:31 PM »
awhile back I bought a BC in 4570, its just now cool enough to cast for it.  I also got new Rem cases for it. the first time I loaded the new cases I as I always do , sized , trimmed, and champhored them. after loading them, most had to be hit more than once to go off. all had good hits on the primer. so I thought that posibly I haddent seated them all the way. so when I loaded the next round I made shure they were down tight, and visualy checked them. I primed 10 and retried without charging. of the 10 3 would not go bang, and 2 had to be hit twice.  so I tried uniforming the primer pockets. same result. next I tried differant primers. I had some CCI, Fed, and old Win. all had the same result. so I thought maybe its the new cases. I have some Hornaday cases that all worked first time. so I reprimed them and got the same result. Ive read through the FAQs and found nothing . is there anything handi related that Im missing? all the primers seem to have a good hit on them, and I dont see any signs of excessive head space . what am I missing ? More than one extractor 45-70 has been reported as having excessively deep rim cuts, I've had personal experience with the problem on my 45-70 Ultra Hunter, push a round in the chamber so it can't go in any further and place a straight edge across the chamber, how much gap is there between the straight edge and and headstamp?

Other possibilities other than not holding the trigger back all the way are weak hammer spring, insufficient pin stroke, bad transfer bar and off center pin strike.

Tim,after a second look, I took the barrel off and dropped a round in. I measure .0045 below the breech face. how much is normal or acceptable? DR

That's not too bad, mine was closer to .010", but add into that the gap to the standing breech, short pin strike, weak hammer spring, or ineffective transfer bar and you get FTFs. H&R has an improved transfer bar, maybe it would be best to contact them and have them fix whatever is wrong with it, you could do the same with some work if you don't mind the effort, replace the spring with a Wolff extra power spring and do Fred M's firing pin improvement, both in the FAQs. ;)

 Thanks Tim,
after some more investigation I think Ive found it! everything worked before I put a hammer extention on it so I removed it and everything is back to normal.Ill just leave the ext off and look into the extra power spring.  thanks again DR

If you have need for more than one Wolff spring, Wolff's shipped cost on the 5 pack is cheaper than Midway's cost for 5 springs alone, I don't know what Wolff charges to ship one spring tho. Glad ya figured out what the problem was, that's a simple fix. The Numrich/ebay hammer extension may be an easy alternative to the heavy factory extension if you don't opt for the Wolff spring.  ;)

thanks for the heads up on the springs! on Wolfs site they ask if I have single coil or double coil? the only ones Ive replaced were pre 1980s, and they were a tortion type spring. as long as Im ordering I may as well get the 5 pak and replace those on the 223 and new hornet also . I put extentions on them at the same time. DR

Single coil, the double coil are for older non-transfer bar H&R hammers with a half cock notch.
