Thanks Mikey, I knew we copied the 30-06 from the 7mm mauser but not how it was done.  Does the 30-06 preform as well as the 7mm mauser or better with the 30cal heavier round?  One more dumb question does the 308win/nato out preform the 30-06 in accuracy at longer distances?

Now i wonder how we came up with the design of the 308 was it from the 7,5mm swiss, the 7,5mm french or the 7,65 argentine other?? We had to copy it from someone.

I am thinking we came up with the 7.62 NATO because ath the time the shorter case gave 30-06 performance with the neww powders in a smaller case size.

Legend has it that the 7.62x51 was inspired by the 300 Savage...  :-\  Sounds as good as anything...   ;D

1911:  AtlLaw is right in that the 308 was inspired by the 300 Savage, it's just that the neck on the 300 was too long.

Now, does the 06 perform as well as the 7mm - oh yeah. better.  The 06 can match just about anything out there and was even considered to be too powerful for military purposes - when loaded heavy the 06 will match the 300 Win Mag and probably a couple of others.  You can handload the 06 to put a 200 gn slug out at 2500'/sec, which is at the 8x57 performance level.

The 06 outshoots the 308 at most any distance.  Heck, even the 303 British took the 1000 yd Wimbleton Cup from the 06 when the 308 couldn't.  The 06 really shines with heavier loads.

FYI, the 06 match load took a 173 gn .308 slug at 2650'/sec.  The 308 match load took the same slug at 2550'/sec.  Not a lot of difference.

The '06 is so close to the 300win mag thats why i passed it up and went with the 338win mag. with 4,000ft lbs at the muzzle and 2,700 ft lbs at 200 yds thats the muzzle energy of an '06 at 200yds.  The old calibers are still good. My next choice was a 375 H&H.

Chilean  '93,  '95

Spanish  '95

Brazil  1908

Czech  VZ24

Mexican

Other 7mm mauser?

Which one do you have or like the best?

The Brazilian is a 98 Mauser, that's my choice

Its the stronger 98 large ring action right?

Some of the other german manufactured 7mm small ring mausers are really purdy though.  I think overall the german manufactured mausers were the best quality the germans at FN Loewe and DWM had to offer.  I think the czech's and the styer's are a close second if not equal also. I like them all anyway.

I don't see any mexican 7mm mausers mainly because they were turned into sporters?

Yep, the large ring is the 98.  Definitely recommended if you are going to reload any hotter handloads.  8)  I purchased a very nice condition sportsterized 95 and then found out that I shouldn't even be using factory level loads, according to some experts.  8(  My buddy bought it off me for the same price I paid, since he was loading his own and made light loads for it for his nephew.

I shot sellier & bellot 7mm mauser ammo which was 173gr with no problem out of my chilean 1895 loewe 29" barreled mauser.  This round has very little kick, i don't think its too hot. I have some of the military surplus FN 7mm FMJ ammo but i haven't shot it yet. If i was going to hot load my 7mm i'd use my 8mm just to play it safe.  I have some of the Igman/hotshot 8mm ammo in 196gr soft point.  Thats good for any game in north america(sons gun). Only because my camp is in the heart of bear country and i've seen the paw prints in the fresh falling snow as big as my 13" sorrel boots. I'm sure the 7mm will do its job but i want the kid to have more of an edge. I found three bigger bruins in three different places and been after them for a while now.

BTW;  I just picked up a spanish mauser in 7mm, 29" barrel made in Oviedo dated 1914.  They say to watch the spanish made mausers for set back play on the bolt because of the soft steel.  This one has none and the bore is excellent.  One must watch out for the 308 spanish mausers that were converted from the 7mm mausers.  These were actually in 308 cetme a much lower powder charge than the 308win and 308nato.  They do say there safe to shoot with modern 308, i believe that www.samcoglobal.com has a posted right up about it.

I don't know anything about the old mausers but Sportmans Guide has a "Used Pre-1898 Chilean Mauser" barreled action for $229. Is this a good deal? What does a stock cost & where would one be found? I'm interested but don't want to buy a box of junk.

Do a search for;  "  sportsmans guide 95 chilean mausers  "   when the search comes up click on the milsurplshooter.com  and the gunboards.com posts and pics will be there in there posts so you can actually see what SPG is offering.

Watch the 7mm Mauser loads in the manuals when loading for a surplus rifle.  The new Nosler manual's starting 7x57 loads are higher than Hodgdon's maxium loads.

I use the CCI #34 nato primers in all my military surplus reloads just incase i throw them in my semi auto's.  This way i'm safe with the reloads for either a bolt action or semi auto.
