Last night I had some time to kill and stopped by Dicks sporting goods.  I held a rifle that resembled an 10FP, but was a little different.  It was a 308, with a 20" - 22" heavy fluted barrel, detachable magazine, and a tan stock.  I've never seen one like it, but it sure felt nice!  They also had one of the new TR models in 22lr with the same color stock.

Those rifles I held last night are not in the Savage catalog in this configuration.  I'm sure it was a special run just for Dick's Sporting Goods, but at the same time why don't manufacturers advertise these special runs?

Because they may be a run for Dick's . It would be in poor taste to have to put in the cat. aval. only at Dick's . Other outlets might not like it.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I've seen that same rifle and thought it was a nice configuration.  But it's like the McMillan-esque Choate stocked 10fp that Cabela's sales. . . it's just through them.

A guy at the range had one of the ones that Cabelas sells and the stocks fit to the rifle was horrible.  The choate stock looks cool, but the palm swell is huge.

My only gripe about the one I saw last night was that the recoil pad was so soft it felt like it might just roll off like a pencil eraser.

I bought a nice 30-06 from dicks a few years ago with a laminated thumbhole stock, but not with a vented fore-end like the newer laminate stocks.  i really like it.  It was also not in the catalogs (111 BTC)

I have heard that manufacturers send second rate guns to the box stores like Dicks and Wally World, what seems to be the general consenseus on this?  I have bought a savage from each of the stores i just mentioned, and neither of them came with a test target.  does that confirm that they are second rate guns?  they both seem to shoot fine to me.

I very very highly doubt they send seconds to anyone. I have an H&S precision that hit on one side of the barrel on one of my LRPV before I fixed it.
