Ruger old army......Crown? I got it back....pictures
« on: December 27, 2010, 07:50:45 AM »
I'm having my ROA.... 7 1/2" cut to 5 1/2"  I need to know about the crown,  I called Ruger and they will not give it out.  Any one know the size crown on the ROA?

Thank you
Bob

I will be sending my ROA out to Clements custom guns, I talked to David about the Ruger crown and he can put the Ruger crown back on the barrel .  I changed my mind, l'm going to make a sheriff's model out of my ROA with a 3 1/2" barrel.....from the forcing cone to the muzzle 3 1/2".  Mailing it out on 1/4/2011  6 to 8 weeks be for I get it back.

FWIW, and IMHO, any decently done crown is as good as another.
The forcing cone is another matter, and just so with the constricted bore at the barrel threads in many revolvers.
Talk to him about those issues and tell us what he says.

I got my ROA back from Clements custom guns.  David at Clements did a fantastic job on cutting my barrel, and and the crown he put on it is great/ super great.  I did not have a lot of time today to shoot it, I put 10 rounds down the 3 1/2" barrel with Winchester ACP 230 GR. JHP.  10 yards great groups.  I love my new ROA sheriff's model.

Hi gcrank1,
Thank you.  I like the way you express words ( American bulldog)  I like that over sheriff's model.  I e-mailed David about what you asked about the constricted bore at the barrel threads and look at the forcing cone.  I told him I will be shooting lead and copper jacket bullets.....200 gr.to 250 gr. and 750 to 1000 fps.  He e-mailed me back a week latter and told me that my ROA is good to go plus it will handle jacketed bullets.  Ruger put the right barrel on the ROA and built like a tank.

Ruger old army instruction manual, The use of jacketed or alloy is not recommended as accuracy is generally not as satisfactory as with the pure lead bullets.

My ROA shooting jacketed bullets is great, I'm happy with the accuracy coming out of a 3 1/2" barrel.  My new ROA (Sheriff's model / American Bulldog )  :) I Hope to get out next week with it.  I have a new toy ;D

Hi SHOOTALL,

Know plans for it yet.  I have it by my bed (loaded) keeping my Springfield 45 company.
I have a lot of fun shooting it, people at the rang come over and ask me about it.  I tell them it is a ROA cut down I
have to explain about the gun.  A lot of people don't know that Ruger made a black powder revolver. ::)

I love it. I'd like to hear more about jacketed bullet use.

Hi Flash,

I have two Kirst Konverters.  45ACP and 45 LC.  My ROA that I had cut down was new (no black powder in this gun)

Winchester white box....45 ACP 230 grain FMJ....Muzzle velocity 835 fps.  At 12 yds good groups.
Winchester white box....45 LC  230 gr JHP......muzzle velocity 880 fps.  At 12 yds the groups were tighter with the JHP
I know......The Ruger manual, the use of jacketed bullets is not recommended as accuracy is generally not as satisfactory.

Blazer ammo in 45 LC......200 grain JHP....muzzle vol  1000 fps.  At 12yds groups were super great, tighter then the ACP cylinder.
With a 3 1/2'' barrel this ROA can shot jacketed bullets with good/great accuracy. (with a rest)
My ROA 7 1/2'' and my 5 1/2'' shooting jacketed out to 25 to 30 yds with a rest groups are great.  The 7 1/2'' will out shot the 5 1/2'' big time.
Jacketed bullets are working for me, it may not work in your ROA.
