Lid tight, in the basement in a custom wood shelf lined with sheet rock and a 1" wood locking door. It sits about 2 feet off the floor - temps are quite stable and cool. Have powder that is 20+ yrs old and I'm current using primers I bought in 1993.

I keep it all in the basement with the lids on tight and I keep my primers in a .50 cal ammo can to keep the moisture out.  Absolutely no problems yet.

Original containers inside a locked sheet metal cabinet with louvres.  My primers are in there as well.  The cabinet is in my reloading/gun room (second bedroom) always at room temperature.

Powders are kept on an open shelf above my loading bench, primers are stored in a GI ammo can on the top shelf.  I still have a few pounds of Hodgden's original WWII surplus 4831 and it's fine.

High heat is what damages powder but if you can live in it so can the powder.

The following are excerpts from regulations on Storage and Handling issued by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as:

495 Explosive Material Code

Not saying your local Fire Marshall is going to check, however, in the event of a fire, your Fire Marshall and Insurance Carrier are going to check.

I store mine in my shop in a heavy wood chest with wood drawers. I have a heat pump which is set on 75 in the summer and about 60 in the winter. I do not store it in the house.

Much of mine was stored for 20 yrs. in cardboard boxes against the wall of my brother's barn.  When I finally got around to reloading again, I had to clean the rat's nests away and sort everything out.  Neither primers nor powder have failed to function.  Most of these components were bought in the late 70's.

They now reside in cabinets in my tool shed.

I store my powder and primers in the OEM containers on top of a dresser in my reloading/guest room.  My space is very limited so I do the best with what I have.

Mine is all on a shelf above my reloading bench.  My reloading "cave" is kept around 75 degrees all the time.  I think that you mostly need to keep the lids on tightly and avoid extreme temperature changes.

fire codes may vary between districts,  you better check. National Fire Protection Agency's publication NFPA 495 is some of the regs.  IMO storing powder and primers openly or tightly sealed has the potential for causing a lot of grief is you should have a fire.  Insurance companies most likely will try (?) not to pay a claim is a hazardous material was improperly stored.  A little self insurance goes a long way.
