Questions?
« on: September 29, 2010, 07:02:13 PM »
ok   so i got a nice .50 cal barrel from a member and a 209 primer plug, i stated to work up a load and have been shooting groups at 40 yds with about 15 differant bullet / sabot/ minnie combinations from 180gr sabots to 460 gr minnies the pb 348gr are shooting the best with 1 ragged hole with some others coming close  now the questions, i am shooting 70gr of 777 powder and on some shots the firing pin totally punches thru the face of the primer and locks up the action - following tims advice from another post i recock and dry fire a few times and the firing pin comes loose and retracts - i can live with that for now but want to find a solid fix for that soon - the big problem is the gun will not hold a group at 100 yds with anythig i shoot. the 348 pb goes from 1 hole to about 7 inches.    what the @#$%^    what am i messing up now.   please send help   season opens on saturday         ohh  and it is on an sb2 frame

You are probly punching holes in the primer cause of the small firing pin of the SB2 on the shotgun primer. If you got a shotgun frame use it there is no real need for a ML to be on the SB2 frame. Are you using FFFG or FFG. Try some FFG for the .50 and in crease your load to 80+ and see what happens. Find one or 2 bullets and try and tune those first and once you get them to shoot consistant 2-3" group work from there .Others should come on here to help with the sabot loads .I just use full bore slugs. I have a 50 cal huntsman and it likes

385 Grain Lead 45 cal MZ bullet in a 50/45 sabot. It also does well with a 300 grain Barnes expander in a 50/45 sabot.  Using 80 grains of BH209 which should be about equivalent to 80 grains of 777, ffg.  Gun also really likes the 460 grain 50 cal. conical from No Excuses (75 grains), must have a overpowder fiber wad though.

No offense intended but should probably check the obvious handi stuff, loose scope or mount, does the barrel lockup tight with no gap or movement,  Stock bolt is tight, no stock movement.

Good luck with your shooting and hope you fill a tag on opening morning.

thank you kurt and biker  -  the fix was very simple  the simple minded operator put the barrel on the wrong receiver i switched it over to an sb1 stock the one it was fitted to    and it is shooing good now   about 2.75 at 100 and 2 high   the receiver i had it on was an sb2 and it was loose enough with the forearm off to wiggle on the receiver now it is locked up tight  without the forearm and the primer is not being pierced
