Shot the Trotter Special today
« on: September 29, 2010, 02:51:28 AM »
This is the stub job Larry did for me.  It is a 12 ga donor stub, with a 7MM TCU made from a Remington 700 take off barrel, originally a 7 mag.  I was shooting at 75 yds, using a 4000 lb rest.  That is, off the hood of my Jeep, using a rolled up sleeping bag for a cushion.  Load was 145 gr RCBS sihouette GC cast bullets, over 12 gr. of Bluedot powder.  Fire forming loads.  I shot 20 rds into a 3 in circle, loading and shooting as fast as I could get back on target.  (It was getting dark).  I am impressed by the rifle and even more by Larry's craftsmanship.  This is an easy one MOA gun (or much less) with any kind of care taken in reloading and shooting technique.  Did I mention that I love this caliber?  NEF should think about this one, or the 7-30 Waters.

It would be nice if Remington would do calibers like that, but unless you can find ammo at Wal-Mart, I don't think they'll get into it.  I don't see why they wouldn't enlarge the Remington Custom Shop to include the Handis.  I think there are enough of us whackos out there to make it pay.  I'm sure they could pull a lot of folks away from T/C.  Oh yeah, and another "Ya Done Good" for Larry.

Sure would appreciate seeing photos of that new shootin iron.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

She's kind of a work in progress.  Since I shot it last night, I've changed the scope out, put the barrel on a different receiver, and put on an old set of pallet wood stocks.  The scope originally on it was from my Dick's Sporting Goods 308, and it STINKS!  I put on a Swift 3X9X40.  The original receiver had a trigger that felt like it was full of sand.  I have a couple more, so I found one that locks up nice and tight, and has a much better trigger in it.  I'll have to attend to the first one later.  The stocks that I have on now were just the ones on the receiver I'm using, she will get the blonde stock set later, after I get through dragging it around so much.  That, and I was too lazy to change them last night.  I'll post some pictures if I can ever get a good 154 gr bullet load worked out.  My reamer left it with a looong throat, so heavy bullets fit better than lighter ones.  Any thing with a boat tail leaves about a quarter inch jump to the lands.  The IHMSA web site has a lot of info on this caliber.  It just seems to be like the 30-30, not real fussy about what it needs to shoot well.  This one really shows promise, I'll know more after I get all my brass fire formed and a real hunting load worked up.

Danny, You got me turning green now like you said you did about
my Trotter 32-20 ;D The mans a true craftsman. Sounds like you
are off to good start. Its a great cartridge, shot many out of my
contender in the 80's killing steel and I'm sure the bullet development
has improved. Knowing you though you will be trying to stuff a long
cast bullet in it ;D. Good luck  Fred

Well now Fredster, funny you should say that.  I somehow just acquired a brand spanking new 3 cavity custom mold from NOE.  It is a 150 grain gas checked mold, with a nice flat on the end, and a long bore rider dia nose.  I got a handful of bullets that were cast up by a frind in the preliminary mold, I've done some fitting with those.  No time to cast up any from my mold yet, but soon.

I would like to hear about the results of this one it sounds like a promising
and thus rewarding idea. I just started loading & shooting a 7mm-08 recently
and this sounds like something worth investigating. Please keep me up to date
as you proceed  Fred

Sounds like you have a shooter ;)

Warning Wil Robinson !!. I had to replace a hood because of that. High rings and target not that far out. Kinda lowers the front of the barrel abit ::)

Yeah, been there.  Put a .32 from a Cherokee through an upstairs window frame taking out a raccoon at the feeder one night and poked a Maxi through my pickups bedside. :'( :'( :'( :'(  Oh well, I hope we never grow up ::)

Hehehehehe... my grandfather put one through the hood of an old Subaru.
It's funny how the barrel and the scope ain't always pointed in the same direction. :D

Maybe that's why I miss deer. ??? :-\

I learned about hi scope rings and close up shooting a few years back when I decided to take a head shot on a big plump squirrel at about 20 ft distance.   Put the crosshairs of my scoped 243 Handi right on his eyeball and squeezed.......in a flash there was no squirrel left.....just the head staring back at me....the body exploded when the 85 grain bullet hit his chest......what a mess :( :( :(

I can't remember how many times I have read about hunters injured from shooting railroad tracks, they lay down on the side grade, rest the rifle on one track and shoot the other one.  Larry

That's how chronographs get shot too, line of sight is well above the bore.  :o
