Great Day at the Range!!!
« on: September 30, 2010, 02:49:42 PM »
Took the 38-55, 260 Rem and my son's Win M670 30-06 to the range this morning, all shooting was done at 100yds, got an accurate load for each rifle with great velocity too, kinda like having my cake and eating it too!!  ;D  First up is the 38-55 shorty, Starline long brass, Reloder 7 and custom 213gr bonded hollow points from Richard's(AtlLaw) bullet guy. I was hoping for 2000fps, I got that with my start load of 35gr!!!  :o  It just got better from there up, my top load of 39.5gr averaged 2313fps, but the group opened up to about 3", but since the primers still look great and they extracted just fine, I'm expecting another great shooting group as I increase the load some more, to be continued!  ;D

NOTE: These 38-55 loads are not safe in traditional 38-55 firearms

The 260 Rem shot great with Rem 9½ primers and IMR4064 this time, no FTFs, and excellent velocity, I only shot 2 shot groups to keep the barrel cool, also saves on powder and bullets, one particular load of 38gr was excellent, another at 40gr good, but too hot, hard to open, but extracted fine, and surprisingly it was more accurate than I thought it would be and plenty fast!! I think I figured out why I was getting flyers, the 38.5gr load is a good example, I caught myself not lifting the rifle off the rest when I reloaded and just closing the action while it was sitting in the rest on the bench which may not lock the action completely due to insufficient latch engagement.

I like the looks of  the 38-55. Is H&R still producing that caliber? :)

Pete's here and not too content.....Not unhappy with the rifle, it's with the reloading.  I did manage to get one round loaded and shot, and the little girl did great.  The reloading isn't going worth a poop. I'll toss it around with Tim in the morning.  No time today.  I have a tractor not running and horses getting out.  Farmer's problems.
