WOOD USED IN MARLIN MDL 60
« on: October 12, 2010, 03:14:05 PM »
I acquired, today, a Marlin MDL 60  carbine.
The stock needs work.
I have read nothing about what wood the Marlins have on them.
Anyone with a clue.
The best guess as to date is 2003--SN 97XXXXX and I know it could not be 1903.
Blessings

To the best of my knowledge and experience in reshaping them, they are typically beech.  There's a few specialty ones out there that were curly maple or walnut, but they are more rare.  Here's a pic of the Model 25 I reshaped and then used Birchwood Casey's GunStock Oil on many years ago:

You might consider just purchasing a new stock also, I've been looking at a Black/Silver lam version to replace my pretty worn 60's stock:

There are also some other one's at Midway like a camo version, synthetic and Dunganov versions.  There is also a Bullpup Version available elsewhere.  Once in a while also, Boyd's does some special Model 60 stock runs of various styles.  My 60 has the cheap pressed checkering/scroll work, so I never did sand it down, because it'd have to be thinned a lot.  8(  Other than that though it's a shooter.  ;)

OK Now.
If I refinish this furniture with true oil---after stripping and sanding---is it going to be blond/yellow? Will it produce a good, clean finish or be blotchy?
I don't really care about the color--just don't want to be suprised.
Since it will go to my oldest Granddaughter--I am even considering doing it a Rit dye pink before the true oil.
Imano.

After a light sanding on some Chinese SKS wood, I used Minwax walnut stain with pretty good results.  Finished with a coat of satin polyurathine.  Looks good.  If I need to refinish again, I would have to use furnature stripper, but the polyurathine is very durable.

Yah, the top picture above is how the Model 25 came out and it's pretty light grained (blonde).  It has some wierd highlights and staining first might obtain better results.  I did that one when I was 17 and didn't really have any experience.  ;)  I still like it though and it stands out.  People ask me all the time what kind of gun it is and seem pretty shocked when I tell them.  ;)

Lol, you're right on the Birch.  I knew it was "b" word, but couldn't remember for sure.  That sounds correct.  ;)
