I have used both the 270 and 25-06 for a number of years and on deer size game out to a little over 500 yards the deer hit with either will not know the difference. They will be dead. The 25-06 works much better for varmints because of bullet selection. There is no difference in perceivable barrel life between them. For the 25-06 I prefer 117 Sierra bullets for deer and 87 Sierra SP bullets for varmints (ground hogs). The 100 gr Sierra or Nosler Ballistic Tip will be a one bullet do it all for the 25-06.

Groundhogs, antelope and deer? ???  Which of these do you use and why? Am going to buy one long range bolt rifle just for fun. I have leverguns that  will cover and take care of anything in U.S. and Alaska up to 200 yards.

The .25-06 would be the better choice of the 2.

I'm with Long Tom.  I'd prefer the 25-06.  I have both 270 and 25-06 for a NEF.  The 25-06 is a bit heavy but I bought it for a distance rifle.  Hornady lite mags boast that sighted at 200 yards the bullet will drop 10.5 inches at 500 yards with a 117 gr bullet.  Try that with a 270. Both calibres are good but the 25-06 is a far better choice for varmint and completly adiquite for deer size game and elk with the right bullet.

I too am a big 25 cal fan. Not so much a 270 fan. Dont ask me why as i really dont have a good reason. Ive killed alot of game with the 25s and lots with a 280 and o6  but have never owned a 270 long enough to actually use one in the field. Im sure some of it comes from my opinion of Jack OConnor. I think he was an arogant ass. Some also comes from the attitude of some of the hunters around here i know. they think because they chose a 270 it made them majicaly a knowlegable rifleman. But in all reality its as good as the other 3.

In two weeks, it will have been a year since 3leggedturtle posted his question.  He also indicated in his January 2010 post that he went with a 25-20(!!).

Another surprise is how well this thread has stayed on topic, even though the text of the OP suggested flexibility in final choice, and confirmed by his purchase of the 25-20.  That should be a fun rifle to shoot!

One of the things overlooked in the 25-06 vs .270 Win discussion is that the 6.5 has a bullet diameter very close to that for the .25's.  With bullet weights from as low as 85 grains to as high as 160 grains readily available, one wonders why the .260 Rem or 6.5-06, or any of the other 6.5's haven't come up.

The 85 grain .264 bullet has a SD only slightly higher (~7%) than the 75gr .257 bullet, making the varmint application about the same for the two, with the .270 being only a little less useful for varmints.  The 6.5's have bullets with greater sectional densities than the heaviest available .257 or .277 offerings.

There may be other arguments in favor of the 6.5, but when all is said, it's hard to truly beat any of them and I would not toss one away in favor of another unless the motivation is to get a rifle better suited to one's needs.

Ahhhh yes the 6.5-06  ::)  I'm having one built on an arg?Mauser action. With a 26" Shilen light varmint barrel and a 4.5x14 Leupold this will be my reach out and touch someone gun ;)  Talk about game versatility, BC, and bullet selection :o

I have both, so that's my answer.  But, I do have two .25-06s and only one .270.  I like both of them and really I'd say .25-06 for deer and below and .270 up to elk.  If I was hunting with my .25-06 with good bullets, I'd not be afraid to shoot an elk.  There are no elk that I know of here in Louisiana, so I doubt I'll have to make that decision.  I grew up with .270s and was introduced to .25-06 by a good friend when I lived in Fort Worth.

I purchased my first centerfire rifle in 1952. It was a Winchester Mdl 70 270  with which I have taken pronghorn, mule deer, elk with 130 Gr bullets, and other smaller critters  with 100 and 110 Gr bullets. My first  prairie dog shot at 300 yards was with 100 Gr bullet hand loads. In the mid 60s I got a Parker Hale heavy barrel 25-06 . I used 120 Gr bullets for pronghorn and mule deer and 87 Gr bullets for smaller critters . The 25-06 would be a bit better for for the game you plan to hunt.  Should you go elk hunting take a look at the 300 Win, 338 Win or 340 Weatherby rounds.  I switched to a 308 Norma Mag after an other AH hunter shot an standing elk I had hit in the lungs with the 270 but had stoped running . Getting back to the P-H 25-06 , I sold it ,boy that was dumb but later I got a Ruger single shot which is not as accurate.

Changed my mind after recently buying a 7mm-08 and a .300 WSM.

The availability of cheap .270 ammo means you'll shoot it more.  $14.50 with a $2.50 rebate.  Practice makes perfect.

Neither is really suitable for varmints.

I like my 25-06 never shot a 270 that I can remember . I doubt any of the critters you plan to shoot would know the difference. The one thing that might make a difference is where you shoot ground hogs . A fast varmit bullet from a 25-06 might break up instead of ricch... like a larger 270 bullet going slower but that's just a thought.

:) I had my first .25-06 when it was still a wildcat...today after trying all the .25 calibers, it is still one of my top choices..Several .270's have passed through my hands, but none ever found a spot as one of my favorites..Like Lloyd I never cared for O'Connor so that may have transfered to the .270...I would go with the .25-06..as someone pointed out with 87 grain bullets it is great for chucks, coyotes, etc. and with 115 grain Noslers a good choice for medium game..but as I move up to big game at long range, I generally prefer a .30 cal..Still as I get older, I find my self often carring the 25-06...This fall, mine took coyotes, antelope, mule deer and whitetailed deer.  For long range coyotes or chucks it is a tough one to beat...

Man this is an old thread.  But in the spirit of keeping it alive, I'll give my $.02

Both the .25-06 and .270 come from the same parent, the .30-06.  They all have their own unique qualities.  All are great medium game rifles with the proper bullet.  For me it really boils down to ammo.  If you do not reload, you'll be at the mercy of the retailers for ammo.  .270 Winchester 130gr soft points are readily available and pretty cheap to boot.

I use a .308 Win for hooves, and a .223 Rem for paws.
Winchester 100 .243; Marlin XS7 .308; Stevens 200 .223; Rossi 92 .45LC; Marlin 1894C .357M; Marlin 30AS .30-30; NEF Pardner Pump 12ga; Mossberg 500 Turkey 20ga; Winchester 1200 20ga; Savage Mark II F .22LR; Henry H001 .22LR; Marlin 60SB .22LR; Ruger 10/22 DSP .22LR; Remington Genesis .50 cal ML; Ruger Vaquero .45LC; Ruger Blackhawk .357M; Ruger SR9c 9mm; Ruger Single-Six .22LR; Browning Buck Mark Camper .22LR; Crosman Powermaster 760 .177; Crosman Storm XT .177; Mission X3

I like both, but my 270's are always more accurate than my 25-06's with stock rifles and factory rounds.............anyone else notice this?

No, but I only have 1 270, which did shoot quite well. Some of the 25-06's were very accurate from the start, some were not. The 25-06 I use the most now did not staart too good, but is an extreme performer, which was worth the effort, the niche I fill with the big 25's works out better than the 270, which has assumed a lessor role, though it is a fine round.

I have 2 25-06's, shoot my hand loads less than 3/4"............haven't found any factory rounds that shoot and better than 1 1/2". My 2  270's will shoot  inch and better with factory rounds..........

I do think there are more good factory loads for the 270, it is a "mature" round with many users of the round, like the 30-06 & lately the 223, the huge amount of folks using this rounds creates alot of competition for better & better factory ammo. But all of that doesn't change the "inherent" accuracy.
One load I have found good in most 25-06's is the Hoornady classic 117, one of the 25-06's will shoot tiny groups with that.
But that stuff isn't very important to me, I have beat them with my reloads for both calibers anyway, I rarely shoot factory ammo these days.

A rifle can be set-up to deliver stellar accuracy with either, the barrel, bedding, loads, etc. come into play more than which caliber.

I purchased my first 25 back in the late 80's, a Remington 700 BDL. I had grown up shooting a .243 and my pop shot the standard '06. I wanted something a bit faster and flatter so I went with the 25. It has for all practical purposes been the most accurate factory rifle I have ever had. It has only had a handfull of factory rounds through it since I got it, so I cannot say how it shoots them. With the handloads however, in any weight up to 130 it has shot sub MOA with a little adjustment of the scope out to any range I ever wanted to shoot it to. I used the 115gr Partition as a standard load and with the scope set dead on at 200yds it was simply a matter of putting the X where I wanted to hit. I have only had to shoot more than once on a couple of occasions, and these could have been arguably not needed. I head shot a skunk at 280+ yards one afternoon on a bet, and hit a yote just under the left eye at 350 from a weaving tri-pod stand one morning while wondering if the thing was still where I had left it the previous year. The load was so predictable that the duplex reticle was all I needed to determine the range of deer hogs or yotes, and adjust for the shot. My daughter now uses it with the 110gr AB's and has taken some very nice deer. The oldest grandson I think just took it over a few weeks back when he took his first buck with it.

Our first .270 came into the house when my pop retired. His co-workers asked me what to get him and I suggested it. He was totally dismayed since they all knew he shot the '06. But since we had 3 of them already I figured he MIGHT find the change of pace nice. Well it took some warming up but with a load I worked up for it, he reached out further than he would have with the '06 and rolled a big yote which was trotting across our back pasture. When he came in he said "ya know this thing will really reach out and touch something". Well he was right, but the caliber wouldn't have mattered as he was probably one of the best shots I have ever seen. That is also another one of our most accurate rifles. It has shot bullets in every configuration from 100 up to 150grs, with a little coaxing into tiny little groups. The load my mom used in it was a very mild recoiling 130gr load running just under 2800fps. It was good enough to pop sparrows off the target holder at 200yds, much to the dismay of my friend who's 22-250 wouldn't.

They are both great calibers in my mind. Do they have limitations, yes, but all calibers do to some extent. As for game size, with the bullets that have been around since the mid 80's till now, I fully believe that more has to do with who is behind them than the caliber. I would not, and did not hesitate to drag my 25 to the mountains of Colorado for elk and mule deer. I knew the rifle well and knew if I put the 115gr where it needed to be the game would stop and stop quickly. I also had the .270 along as well since it is lighter and easier to pack around I used it as well. When the time came to make the shot on my mule deer it was the 25 which was in hand and the shot took him cleanly at about 40yds, and he never took a step. I don't take questionable shots or rushed shots on game animals. If I cannot make the one I want, I am happy in the fact I had a chance.
