.45 ACP
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:28:07 PM »
I may start reloading for the ACP, and according to my Speer book it can use the same bullet as the .45 Colt.  I can get .45 cast SWC locally at a pretty good price but I'm concerned how the SWC will feed in an auto.  Can I use these, or do I need to order some RN bullets. What about RNFP?
The gun I'm looking at is a 1911, either a Taurus or a Springfield.

I've never had a problem with lead SWC in my S&W 4506 or my Para P12.45 with factory loads or ones I've done up in my Dillon SDB.

I've loaded and shot lots of .45 acp for a kimber and my Blackhawk convertible without issue.  Had some shoulder rubs on XTP hollowpoints that kept it from going into battery, but swc's haven't been any issue.  8)

I shoot 200gr LSWC all the time in my .45, no feeding issues at all, but I have heard of some that are picky and need a bit of ramp work to get them to feed anything but ball reliably.  Go for it, and good luck.

FWIW; When I start a "new" project like reloading, I like to start with some tried and true methods to eliminate as many frustrations as possible to shorten the learning curve as much as possible. So, I'd get plain old "standard" 230 gr. lead round nose bullets for the 45 ACP, load 'em and shoot 'em and when I had that down, I'd try somthing else...

Yeah, that's not bad advice. I also believe in doing as much research as possible before starting any new venture. I was hoping to be able to avoid having to order the bullets, that's why I raised the question.  I always try to buy localy when I can but if I need to order them, so be it.

I've got a really good source for local leads and you get about 1000 for 75-80 bucks.  Might want to take a look.  8)  I use the LSWC for hunting, but most of my plinking loads are the 200 gr. RNFP.  8)

They are available locally to me at Jay's Sporting goods, depending on your location, but he ships also.  8)

keep in mind though that alot of the 45 colt bullets are longer in the nose and dont feed well.

I've actually had contact with Dardas bullets, I found their link on the Marlin Owners website.  He seems like a pretty good guy and his prices are very reasonable.  When I'm ready for more bullets for my .357 & .380 I'll probably order from him.
Thanks for the heads-up.
