Beautiful trail....all uphill.
« on: May 26, 2012, 02:39:26 PM »
Walked the Pine Mt. Trail yesterday and today, my pedometer says 28 miles, the trail map says 24.  I remembered how old I was not too far in, as I found it's all uphill both ways  :D

I remembered how old I was not too far in, as I found it's all uphill both ways  :D

I can relate; we hiked the Mist Falls trail in King's Canyon, CA a couple of years ago and the elevation change from start to finish just about did me in. I guess it didn't help that I live at sea level.  :o

A few years ago we were eating lunch at a place near the start of the Bright Angel trail in the Grand Canyon. A couple of middle-aged ladies were in the booth next to us, who told the waiter they were going to hike down the entire trail and back up that day. They asked him if there was anything special they should bring with them on the hike. The guy responded...

 "Do you have a helicopter?"

I've done several out and backs and a few Loops.  Isn't it weird how you can start and end at the very same place and it be all uphill.

Serious looking slope, that! When do you think you'll be feeling good enough to tackle something like that again, Ben?
FWIW, 20yrs. ago I was 'packing about 70# into the interior of the Porcupine Mtns Wilderness, in the UP; right into the center of it. Got to camp and went out to forage firewood and 'had a significant coronary episode'. This was pretty much pre-cell phone days, so no com, spent another 3 days pacing myself and walked about 22mi. out. Best thing was living to tell about it, or brag; I was 39.
One never can tell when, and you can only be about just so prepared, so make sure youve made peace with all before you go in.

Well, I tell ya'.  As soon as hunting season is over, I'll be back at it.  I truly enjoy the solitude and beauty.  My Dr. asked me, "you do know you're 60 don't you!"  I sure do, so I'll allow more time.

If I kick the bucket there, it's ok...I don't invite death but I'm ready and I couldn't find a better place to go.

Sure enough, ain't it so.....
When I realized I was having 11 of the 10 warning signs of a heart attack I sat down at a stump. The sun was shining, I was in the wilderness and it was a glorious day, by God; couldnt ask for a better exit for me, though it would really put a damper on my friends excursion!
20 yrs. on and Im still kicking (and 3 more H.A.'s, too) just not as high........keep on keepin' on, bro.  ;)

Near 60???  You're just a young'n.  I'm 69 and last year I was talking to a Ranger about  some trails in the Kisatchie Wilderness Area I wanted to try.  Since I had shared with him about my heart problem (15% ejection fraction) he said "No way.  We have no way to get you out of the Wilderness Area since there are no mechanical devices allowed".  I finally just told him;  "Just get the tennis shoes, I do believe everything else should be biodegradable."

My wife and I backpacked a lot.....now that we're older we still enjoy the trails.....but now by horseback.......we rode somewhere 20 weekends this year as well as a week riding in the Great Smokey Mountains.

So, tell him to bring you out on a pack mule......
