300 wsm,180 Scirocco11,elk
« on: April 19, 2011, 08:17:56 AM »
New here and I reall enjoy this site.Going on my first elk hunt in colo. this fall. been looking at ballistis calc. and bullets. Taking my 700 in 300wsm good shooter. Thinking I'll sight dead on at 300, plus or minus 4" at 150 yds, 9" low plus or minus at 400. 150grn is an inch or so flatter on each end  with 165's and 180's being close depending on load an rifle. Thinking  I should just go with the 180 scirocco11's. Should hold together on the 100 and closer shot but still have enough expansion and killing power at 400. Probably could go with any of the premium bullets but the bc is quite good on the swifts. I may never get back out there so I'm probably over thinking it. What do ya think? :'(

I'm quite the non expert. Where I hunt you can find elk at the long range. However, last year I took mine at 35 yards ;). I used a 300WM and 180 Partition. .30 in and .30 out in between was a mess though. So don't discount the close range effectiveness of your choice. I have no doubt the Scirocco would hold up, but no experience.

If you are new to the mountains I would try to borrow or own a range finder. I really used mine a bunch the first couple of days to get a feel of the ranges. Easy to missjudge in the 400 to 550 ranges as being a far poke but doable. I really don't want much to do with 400 myself.

Oh, get that one trip thing outta your mind, won't happen. You will take a PT job at the Stop and Rob before you miss two in a row.

Thanks for the input guys I'm not dead set on the swift. i'm sure concerned about the real close up performance and hoping not to have to shoot 400yds just need to be prepared . I've killed lots of deer, boiler room shots are what I try to hit but things can happen.I'm sure I'll like the hunt  just some health related suff from a sled acc. I had a couple yrs ago (spinal injury) slows me down abit. Thanks again.

;)  Have never used Scirocco on elk or anything else..Nosler Part. have worked super for 50 years...no doubt no problems..I have shot two elk with Accubonds and they did a fine job...I think either would be just what you are looking for....

Another great bullet is the 180 gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. I have killed 6 Elk and a Alaskan moose with my 300 Weatherby. Most were complete pass throughs, with massive internal damage.  The one Bullet that I recovered, was a perfect mushroom, withalmost no weight loss.
