Duelling
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:57:55 AM »
I've been reading an excellent book about the history of deulling ("Duelling with the Sword and Pistol" by Kirchner)  Excellent read for anyone interested.

The question is limited to dueling with sword or muzzle loader.

I had typed a long winded post on the subject, but I decided on reading it that I'd rather see where the discussion goes.

Since you chose the MUSIC FORUM for this discussion on "dueling", I choose the FIDDLE BOW at 50 paces. Though not a sword, it's quiter than a pistol, and less fatal if "touched", though unlikely at 50 paces. ;)

Red bound version of the USMC Officer's Guide still included the story of a young Marine officer serving in the days of tall ships who was instructed by the Commandmant to demand satisfaction from the entire Navy Wardroom at the next port of call, or resign his commission as a coward. While that story struck a chord in me, I cannot imagine facing another man with a sword ... pistols maybe. So if FORCED to duel, I take pistols at 200 yds. Time those IHMSA dues paid off.
