Foot placement
« on: September 22, 2010, 04:47:41 AM »
My Father and I are both Trad shooters longbow and recurve.
I love and respect my father like all sons should and he has more Trad knowledge in his little finger than I will ever have. That being said, we are at odds with my foot placement when I'm shooting. I shoot left handed(all great shooters do) ;D soo my right foot is forward while my big toe on my left foot is just about centered on my right. Feet are shoulder width apart. He says by doing this my shoulder is not lined up with the target and I'm having to fight across my body while shooting. Any suggestions? Love ya POPS!!! (STREAK)

Foot placement has its place on the line of a competetion, but not so much in a hunting situation.  Let me explain a bit.  I've been bowhunting for many years and I've never had a shot on a deer where I had time to worry about the placement of my feet.  You have to be able to piviot at your hips and still shoot accurately. You should also be able to shoot while sitting down or while kneeling and both of these cases your feet have nothing to do with how well you shoot.

I'm sure your dad is just like I was when teaching my kids how to shoot.  You want to first teach them perfect form and the basic mechanics of shooting.  By teaching this they learn to become consistant and it trains their brain and body to perform the motions without thinking.  However once my kids got the basics down, then we started praciticing for real.  When I say "real' I mean how they might have to take a shot out in the field.  So if you are just learning how to shoot traditional my best advice to you is, Listen to your Dad, he has been there and done that.  Now on the other hand if you had been shooting for a while and were consistant, shoot how you feel comfortable.  Comfort in shooting is the number one reason we hit what we are aiming to hit....;)

Many times, even though miles apart Derek and I have shot at some real small targets in a weekly shooting event.  I have not once thought about my foot placement when I shoot and hit most everytime where I want my arrows to go.

All I do is get my proper anchor point and my sight alignment and I've always been saisfied with that,if you put to much on your mind you open up the window for errors.

Very good advice given by the other posters!
My brother-in-law got me into this traditional stuff several years ago and I bugged him alot about how to shoot properly. The best advice he ever gave me was, "It doesn't matter how you shoot or what you look like shooting as long as you hit where you want to."
I totally agree with something All Hawks Kill posted and I'm just going to copy and paste it here, "shoot how you feel comfortable.  Comfort in shooting is the number one reason we hit what we are aiming to hit."

GOOD SHOOTING!
