Afghanistan's dirty little secret

Joel Brinkley

San Francisco Chronicle August 29, 2010 04:00 AM
Sunday, August 29, 2010

Western forces fighting in southern Afghanistan<http://topics.sfgate.com/topics/Afghanistan> had a problem. Too often, soldiers on patrol passed an older man walking hand-in-hand with a pretty young boy. Their behavior suggested he was not the boy's father. Then, British soldiers found that young Afghan men were actually trying to "touch and fondle them," military investigator AnnaMaria Cardinalli told me. "The soldiers didn't understand."

All of this was so disconcerting that the Defense Department<http://topics.sfgate.com/topics/United_States_Department_of_Defense> hired Cardinalli, a social scientist, to examine this mystery. Her report, "Pashtun<http://topics.sfgate.com/topics/Pashtun_people> Sexuality," startled not even one Afghan. But Western forces were shocked - and repulsed.

For centuries, Afghan men have taken boys, roughly 9 to 15 years old, as lovers. Some research suggests that half the Pashtun tribal members in Kandahar<http://topics.sfgate.com/topics/Kandahar> and other southern towns are bacha baz, the term for an older man with a boy lover. Literally it means "boy player." The men like to boast about it.

"Having a boy has become a custom for us," Enayatullah, a 42-year-old in Baghlan province, told a Reuters reporter. "Whoever wants to show off should have a boy."

Baghlan province is in the northeast, but Afghans say pedophilia is most prevalent among Pashtun men in the south. The Pashtun are Afghanistan's most important tribe. For centuries, the nation's leaders have been Pashtun.

President Hamid Karzai<http://topics.sfgate.com/topics/Hamid_Karzai> is Pashtun, from a village near Kandahar, and he has six brothers. So the natural question arises: Has anyone in the Karzai family been bacha baz? Two Afghans with close connections to the Karzai family told me they know that at least one family member and perhaps two were bacha baz. Afraid of retribution, both declined to be identified and would not be more specific for publication.

As for Karzai, an American who worked in and around his palace in an official capacity for many months told me that homosexual behavior "was rampant" among "soldiers and guys on the security detail. They talked about boys all the time."

He added, "I didn't see Karzai with anyone. He was in his palace most of the time." He, too, declined to be identified.

In Kandahar, population about 500,000, and other towns, dance parties are a popular, often weekly, pastime. Young boys dress up as girls, wearing makeup and bells on their feet, and dance for a dozen or more leering middle-aged men who throw money at them and then take them home. A recent State Department report called "dancing boys" a "widespread, culturally sanctioned form of male rape."

So, why are American and NATO forces fighting and dying to defend tens of thousands of proud pedophiles, certainly more per capita than any other place on Earth? And how did Afghanistan become the pedophilia capital of Asia?

Sociologists and anthropologists say the problem results from perverse interpretation of Islamic law<http://topics.sfgate.com/topics/Sharia>. Women are simply unapproachable. Afghan men cannot talk to an unrelated woman until after proposing marriage. Before then, they can't even look at a woman, except perhaps her feet. Otherwise she is covered, head to ankle.

"How can you fall in love if you can't see her face," 29-year-old Mohammed Daud told reporters. "We can see the boys, so we can tell which are beautiful."

Even after marriage, many men keep their boys, suggesting a loveless life at home. A favored Afghan expression goes: "Women are for children, boys are for pleasure." Fundamentalist imams, exaggerating a biblical passage on menstruation, teach that women are "unclean" and therefore distasteful. One married man even asked Cardinalli's team "how his wife could become pregnant," her report said. When that was explained, he "reacted with disgust" and asked, "How could one feel desire to be with a woman, who God has made unclean?"

That helps explain why women are hidden away - and stoned to death if they are perceived to have misbehaved. Islamic law also forbids homosexuality. But the pedophiles explain that away. It's not homosexuality, they aver, because they aren't in love with their boys.

Addressing the loathsome mistreatment of Afghan women remains a primary goal for coalition governments, as it should be.

But what about the boys, thousands upon thousands of little boys who are victims of serial rape over many years, destroying their lives - and Afghan society.

"There's no issue more horrifying and more deserving of our attention than this," Cardinalli said. "I'm continually haunted by what I saw."

As one boy, in tow of a man he called "my lord," told the Reuters reporter: "Once I grow up, I will be an owner, and I will have my own boys."

Hmmm, so much for the mantra about homosexuality only being genetic and not a matter of recruitment.

Considering the locale, it might affect friendly countries or those that can dish out the same

My solution, keep them there and get our butts out.

No more than those in the city of sodom . You did read the part where the young man was waiting until he could have his own string of boys ? And true it might effect others but they have allowed it at their door step for years and it spilled over on us on 9/11

This is a Bible story which at least IMO has little or nothing to do with reality. However to take this as true for the sake of this discussion,  the fire falling from heaven etc did not affect the whole country or even the nearest surroundings outside( yep, there was one more place) if I understood this correctly.

scatterbrain , To me all stories in the Bible have meaning , that's just me. As far as a nuke in my opinion it should have been dropped on Tora Bora as soon as possible after 9/11 . It would have been the right responce IMHO. As for the homosexuals there today really God will judge them and short of his using the US Military as his tool we should make sure those who attacked us can not do it again no matter what is nessary to make sure .

It is not just Afghanistan. I was a USAF MP in Libya (1969-70) when Khaddafi took over and expelled all the western military. I was beside then Col Chappy James when he told Khaddfi to take the RCC(Revolutionary Control Council) and shove it up his butt.  He countered with "Have you ever heard of the SAC? (Stategic Air Command).  You keep F-wording with my Airbase and I'll bomb you back to the Stone Age!"   Not a long trip for a camel jockey. I have to say for the record Col Chappy James, VietNam Fighter Ace, ( I was with him later in Thailand) is without a doubt one of the finest Americans I ever served under.  He rose to the rank of 4 stars, and within 30 days of retiring from his last duty as Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, the highest military job, he passed away.  He is one our greatest black Americans.
Back to the subject(but you who weren't there needed to know that)- All said above is true. In the middle-east they wear bagged pants called "7 day shitters" looking for the next Messiah to be born of a man{and how do you do that}?  They fold down the backs of their shoes to expose their heels because supposedly a cat will bite one of them on the heal to revael the next Messiah! My wife works at a VA Credit Union and has contacts with mant vets in and out of that area.  Young girls are for sale CHEAP,  and the locals freely talk about sex for procreation with women, but for fun with men!  Based on what I saw in Libya, what I know now, we really screwed up going there- a nukes to the whole area would have been money well-spent.

No arguement there from me except the nuke stuff.
I'm thinking folks that live in a glass house shouldn't be tossing rocks carelessly. When you have legalized  marriage between same genders in your own country. ::)  Yes, same in Canuck Land as far as I know. :(

Unfortunately you are correct same sex marriage is legal here and that disgusts me as well but pedophilia is against the law here which is the major difference...

Is this practise because of their religion or because of culture whuch could go back earlier then Islam, I don't know and is a moot point anyway. One more reason to keep them out of the west.

I am 100% disgusted by homosexuals of any race but I'll try and respond in a non-disgusted way...

The ones that openly practice pedophilia with innocent little boys are the ones that are the worse...

Men taking boys as lovers is not just an Afghan issue, but rather a Muslim one. Iraq is the same way, they call them Chai Boys. Just about all Muslim countries I am aware of, allow men to have little boys. Heck, in Iraq with the prisoners at Abu Grahib, they had what we called "Man loving Thursdays" Eveidently on Thursday Allah turns a blind eye to sin. I had several Christian enterpreters from Iraq while there, and they all had sotries about their Muslim neighbors as men liking little boys.

I watched a news story on these dancing boys. Their parents, rather fathers, sell them, knowing they will be repeatedly raped and sexually abused. What kind of a man would do that????? Easy, a muslim. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Old Afghani saying: "A woman for business, a boy for pleasure, a goat for choice."  We're trying to help these people?  The British got out, the Russians got out, what are we doing?  Goatwhiskers
