« on: November 11, 2003, 12:23:19 PM »
I was just given a Colt Single Action Buntline Scout .22LR and I know nothing about this firearm. Please help with any information anybody may have.

To Load: Thumb the hammer back to half-cock. That's two clicks on a traditional colt. The cylinder should spin freely on half-cock. Open the loading gate just rear of the cylinder and insert the cartridges. Leave one chamber empty under the hammer if you're going to carry it. Pull the hammer back and pull the trigger to fire. When it's empty, put it on half-cock again, open the loading gate and press the ejector rod located just under the barrel. This will pop the empties out.

To field strip: I haven't field stripped a colt in a long time, but you have to take out a little screw just foward of the cylinder on the frame in order to remove the cylinder pin. Once you remove the cylinder pin, open the loading gate and remove the cylinder. You may have to put the hammer on half-cock or something to do this. Like I say, I haven't messed with a colt much, so some of these other guys can probably help you a little more.
Even without grocery stores, I won't go hungry.

Just to add to RJJ's help:

To get an empty under the hammer without sticking your face in front of the cylinder and looking (unsafe):

Put the gun in the half cock position as he noted.

Open the loading gate.

Insert one cartridge.  Revolve the cylinder leaving one empty spot after the first is inserted and go to the 3rd empty cylinder.

Add the additional 4 one at a time.

After you insert the 4th cartridge, close the loading gate and pull the hammer to full cock, then lower it gently with your thumb while pressing the trigger.  The hammer will be sitting on the empty chamber.

Yes, you do have to put the hammer on half cock to remove the cylinder.

My Dad said the same. Load one, skip one, load four. Cock it and drop it. But check it til you're sure

The description for removing the cylinder Will gave you is for the Black Powder 1st Generation frame.  On the later revolvers, which your gun is, to remove the cylinder you will see a crossbolt just ahead of the cylinder.  With the revolver half-cocked, press this button in left to right (?) and pull the cylinder pin forward to release the cylinder.  It should drop free if or when the loading gate is opened.

I believe Will was correct on this one.  The Colt Scout frame required you to remove the screw that retained the cylinder pin.  I don't believe those had the push button release.  Sure wish I had mine back.  It was a great shooter!   44 Man

Yep, Will is right on this one.  I've had a scout since my 11th birthday and it does have a screw.
