getting ready
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:49:01 PM »
I took my son out shooting the Contender carbine Saturday with the 7-30 Waters in preparation for his hunt this coming Friday. We shot up most of the ammo that I had loaded. I started to reload yesterday but realized that I was almost out of AA2520. I went ahead and loaded up 24 rounds this morning using 4350. It is not as accurate as the 2520 and a tiny bit slower but it is what I had.
This is my son's last year of applying for youth hunts. He was fortunate to draw a kaibab plateau doe permit. We leave Thursday and drive 500 miles to the extreme north part of our state.
The fed in their great wisdom has imported California Condors to the grand canyon area. The state is trying to limit the lead that the condors eat so they encourage the use of lead free bullets. I loaded up 120 grain triple shock bullets behind 40.5 grains of 4350. It sure fills up the case.

We had a great time.
He got his deer on Friday late afternoon. He hit it as it was looking at him from around 75 yds. The bullet broke several ribs going in then clipped the hunerous or the deer equivelent and broke it. Shreaded one lung like I have never seen, destroyed the liver passed through the intestines without turning them inside out. It then traveled out of the deer's paunch and hit the ham, stopping just inside the skin. The deer ran 40 or so yards and keeled over. That X-bullet is a beautifull thing, it opened perfectly big, wide and deadly. The Contender carbine in 7X30 waters is a awesome light but powerfull rifle. We had a good time in some of the best country in Arizona. We saw a lot of deer hanging in camps and on the back of vehicles, there had to be a great sucess rate.
You out of staters, you do know that your kids can hunt Arizona and pay the same as residents.
