44 has new home
« on: September 09, 2010, 06:44:39 AM »
Picked up my new old 1849[1978] today, she's a littel  ruogh around the edges and probly paid to much for it 350.00 OTD but it's home now. I'll take it to the range sun. and put a few rounds down range, then strip it down and start refinnishing it.

Congrats, that seems like a good deal.  The ones around here are pricey for new and the used arent much better.  Got pics?

I love my 44 marlin. Shoots better than I do these days! It'll be a go to gun when you get to know it. It is my leaning at the front door rifle!  ;)

Range report: lead did alright at 50 yrd. about 1 1/2" group and 240 xtp's did nice 3 shots cuting each other [4x scope] only had 5 rounds with me but 300 xtp's did 2.5" at 100 yrds. I can live with that for deer/hog hunting. Now that I got it all taken apart and re-bluing and re-staing the stock when I get it put all back together it will be my main swamp gun. I think I like fixing them up as much as I like shooting them.

Finnished re-staing the stock, came out nice, after 6 coats of true oil and rubing down with 0000 steel wool I used johnson past wax this time, the cold blue came out alright but I think I should have done a few more coats and not rushed it. I know I need pics. but cant figgure out how to do it yet.

I think it's my new favorite for now. Did you get that set of horns with your new 44 ?

That 12 point was shot by my grandfather. It has a metal Michigan tag ( 1933 ).
He got it in a blizzard with a 12 gauge using buckshot. It was on the floor of his garage and the brow tines had been wittled down by mice.
I do have some decent mounts but no Michigan 12 points other than the heirloom.
My grandfather was President of the Detroit Metro archers association and shot competitivly against Fred Bear.
I think I'll be looking for a decent buck come November, using the 44.
