forend hanger screw holes faulty?

Anybody had any problems with recent forend hanger screw holes popping through lately?  Seems like H&R used to put a better taper on these screw holes in the past.  I have had a couple of screws break right through lately damaging the forend as a result.  I do not think I was doing anything any differently than in the past - i.e., not overtightening the screws or anything like that.  When I inspected the holes, they had little to know taper to retain the screws.

I too have seen this on the last couple of new ones I bought.
So far no problems but I am extra careful.

You can fix it with epoxy, just dont glue the screw in permanently!
Also, all it has to do is hold the forend on, snug to a tad tight is all that is needed.

Dinny, Great minds think alike....or whatever.  I glued the one that popped through with gorrilla glue and I intend to countersink a washer and use a round-head machine screw.  Have another new one that is getting close.  I generally use my fat wrench and don't over torque these things - so something is a little different.

To always keep the forend screw torqued the same, I put a 1/4-20 by 1/4" set screw into the mounting hole. I screwed it down tight with some loctite on it. Now when I put the forend screw back in, it always bottoms out on the set screw before I can damage the forend by accident.

Never ceases to amaze me how little info makes its way from airguns to firearms (and vice versa).  Airgunners have been using forend screw cup kits for decades - because the harsh recoil of hi-powered spring guns may literally tear up the forend stock screw hole.  They are usually a brass (or steel) 'cup' which is inletted/epoxied into forend and used with a lock washer.  Most of the 'higher-end' airguns have them from the factory.

Couple months back I bought 3 stock sets and the forestocks were modified exactly like yours.  Maybe the same smith, who knows.  Well I only kept one of the barrels so the other two forestocks mods didn't match with the barrels and I got to remove the "black stuff" from the barrel inlets.  I used a dremel and sanding drum.  If you ever remove that stuff with a sander, better wear a mask.

  I saw the post, I'm pretty sure it was the same smith. You could just take out enough to re-glass to the new barrel. Many smiths do that all the time for the Hogue stocks with bedding blocks in them. They're usually close, but hardly a perfect fit like the glass is. I have instructions for the job, if needed.
