« on: December 13, 2003, 03:53:00 AM »
Hello, :D I like my flint lyman deerstalker so much that I just ordered a 54cal cap lock GPR. I shoot 777 out of my underhammer and in another cap lock but it has a mag spark on it was wondering has anyone used777in there gun will the #11 cap set it off? This is my first 54 what is a good ball and patch size and charge to start with? Will be using it for deer hunting.has anyone used the R.E.Davis deerslayer trigger in there GPR? Are there any tips or tricks to get all the potential from this gun ?What kind of groups do you guys get with your GPR? And what is your over all opinion of the gun? I started out with inlines and have gave those to my sons and have stepped up to the big bore traditional challenge. Thanks for any info bowfish....

A #11 will set off 777 FFG fairly well. Just tip it on it's side and knock some of the powder under the nipple. Also make sure you put breach plug grease on the clean out screw as well as the nipple. My GPR is a .54  and I'm using a .530 ball with a .018 pillow ticking patch with 75 gr of FFG 777. I've been getting 1" at 50yds and 1 1/2" at 75. with the adjustable rear sight (after making it non adjustable    ). It made a poor adjustable sight, but a better fixed sight after fixing it. The round screw in the crecent can hurt when shooting Just remove the round headed screw and replace with a flat headed wood screw. I blued the screw first to match the crescent.

:D      I have two,or is it 3 Lymans.  Sometimes cant keep track.  At any rate,I use 80 of Swiss 2f in mine, with a .530rb.  Patch is about .018,lube is pure neetsfoot oil.  Good rifle and very accurate also.  I have removed the original sights, and went to the Peep that Lyman has, easy to install with no additional screw holes.  Everything just kinda drops in.  I noticed after putting these sights in,that the accuracy also improved quite a bit with it.  Never saw a problem yet with someone using the 777 with a #11 cap.  I dont use that powder, but instead use the Swiss,Elephant, and Goex in most of my rifles, and have not experianed a problem.  If you have some fp10 or other good lube on the cleanout screw and nipple you will not have any problems..........Stay safe....King 8)  8)

I have the GPR in .54 cal. I also got the Great Plains Hunter barrel from Mid-south. In the gpr I use 75 grains of 3f triple 7 with .530 ball and .015 patch. I also use an over powder wonder wad. With the hunter I have been using 80 grains of 3f t 7 an over powder wonder wad and .380 grain REAL bullet. Both so far are looking very good. With the weather have only been getting in limited amount of shooting.
