Got a new walnut grip set ready to go
« on: October 03, 2010, 11:23:07 AM »
Here's a couple of pics:

Bought this set used off another forum. I'll be testing it out next Sunday. I'm going to start off with the 22 hornet barrel and the large fore end (in first pic), then if all goes well switch to the 375 JDJ barrel and the small fore end (second pic). I like the large grip, it's fuller and fills my hand better than any of the other grips I have so far. Should help with the boomer hand cannon barrels better.

The fore ends are set up for hanger bars. I did have to mill out the ends of the hanger bar slots for the hanger bar mounting screw heads to clear in the slot, but that was no biggie.

If all goes well, I'm going to need a bunch more hanger bars!

Sweeeeet.  That grip looks very similar to this grip. Mine is a laminate and it works very well.

The top photo looks just like my set. Even the wood looks very close. You will love that grip. Right now mine is attached to a new to me 22 hornet barrel but I haven't done much with it yet.

Had it at the range last Sunday. The wind was blowing pretty hard, and switching back and forth all morning, so the 22 Hornet didn't get much range time. Shot the last of the 375 JDJ loads that I had left over from various load development recipes. At least the wood stayed on it!

 ;D

I figure if those loads didn't crack the grip, nothing I'll shoot from it will, and it'll be fine.

Hey Slim.  How are you liking the 375?  How would you compare it to the 45/70?  Still have not picked up a big bore yet.  Still on the fence.  Have you found a favorite load?

Hey sorry I didn't see your question sooner.

I'm really liking the JDJ. It is definitely a handfull to shoot, no doubts there. I still say it's easier to shoot than my 45-70 if I'm running full power smokeless loads in it. The JDJ barrel is 16", from SSK, and has a radial brake on it. The recoil on that one is literally straight back, no muzzle rise at all. The 45-70 barrel is a 14" factory barrel with the "muzzle tamer" on it, so not quite a full radial brake. The recoil on the 45-70 barrel with full power smokeless loads creates quite a bit of muzzle flip, but also the gun torques sideways in your hand at the same time.

Of the two, the JDJ is easier to shoot for extended periods than the 45-70.

Now for just pure entertainment, the 45-70 barrel, with real blackpowder loads is a whole bunch of fun to shoot. The recoil with those loads is extremely manageable, and I shoot it quite easily one-handed. That is pretty much all I shoot out of the 45-70 bbl now, is BP loads. It makes a huge hit at the public range I frequent.

For the JDJ, my favorite load is with the Hornady 270 SP Interlock bullet, and 48.5 grs of IMR 4064. This load is below "max" according to the data sheet from SSK.

I have let several of the range regulars shoot the JDJ, but I would not let a beginner shooter try it. I'll let just about anyone who wants to shoot the BP loads from my 45-70 bbl.

If you were near Phx, AZ or planning to come through, I'm usually at Ben Avery shooting range every Sunday morning. I'd let you have a try at it.

Thanks for the info Slim.  Sure wish I was closer I would sure take you up on the offer.  Would love to shoot with another TC fan.  I will most likely go with the .375 JDJ due to the good reports on the performance of the round.
