.22 getting rare?
« on: October 14, 2010, 06:53:01 AM »
Hello all,  I'm new to TC.  I picked up an 82 vintage contender frame with a 10" 357 barrel.  I really like this pistol.  I would like a .22 barrel for small game and plinking, but they seem a little scarce in my neck of the woods.  So I might have to order one from some manufacturer.  any suggestions?  I'd like to keep the price down a little, I'm not a competitor and don't require match barrels.  I 'd appreciate any advice or suggestions.  thanks  for your time

ben

They show up here from time to time in the classifieds.  I bought three here over the years (one 10" octagon, one 14" and one 16" stainless).  I second the suggestion to post a WTB in the classifieds here.  You never know until you ask.

Ed's Contenders has a few listed on his site. Give him a call. Good man to deal with.

thanks for the suggestions guys,  what length would you recommend?  I plan on using iron sights, so maybe the 16 "  might work out best?

I say start with whatever shows up in a good deal.  You will probably end up with several anyhow.  My 10" octagon with open sights, 14" bull with a 2.5-10x50mm rifle scope, and 16" tapered (open sights) are all very fun to shoot.

Overall though, I am partial to the 10" barrels in nearly all of my calibers.  I just like the way the short tubes handle.  Your personal preference may differ.

Dear Ben,
I have a 6.5, 10, and 14 [.22]. All iron saddle sights. I totally agree with Curtis, the ten is funnest. Except for maybe stand hunting, the 10 is also the best in the field. I prefer the bull [round] barrels.

This is where I shop when overwhelmed by the fever:
1-Contender classifieds, here on GBO
2-Ed, look at his web site, then call
3-GunBroker, even if you don't register you can look around

Some of the retailers have new barrels.

Good Luck with that fever thing,  P.A.

I got my first Contender in the early 70's and from the very beginning the .22lr was always the next barrel I's gonna get, but, a more intriguing barrel would always pop up.  It wasn't until the mid 80's that I finally got one. I missed a lot of good shootin' time there.  Had several since...10", 14" and 16".  The 10" is probably the most accurate of them all....not saying I can shoot it the best, cause I can't.  But off the bags it'll out do the others(including a couple of pretty fair rifles).   Get one and burn a brick or two ;D.
