deer and coyote caliber
« on: December 08, 2003, 08:49:00 AM »
a friend came to me and asked which barrell he should get for his Encore. he told me that he wanted something that he could use on coyotes, here in Michigan, and also use it for whitetails when he goes to Texas. I could not provide him with any "hands on" advice but i opened my loading manuals and ballistic charts and tried to help him out. I ended up suggesting  a 243 win  or maybe a 25-06. this friend will most likely use factory ammo. I would like to hear some opinions on this as i have never even fired either of these two calibers. help us out guys. thanks in advance..

7mm08, 260 use the 100 grain points for coyote and the 130+ for deer.

7M-08 for sure and maybe 243.  6mm would be nice also, if he can find the ammo.

I would choose the 22/250. I have one in a 26" heavy barreled Encore and have dropped deer at two hundred yards with a 52 grain HPBT. If their adrenalin isn't pumped up, you can drop them with a 222, and easily too.

is 22cal legal for deer in most states? I was also trying to steer him towards a caliber that he can easily find ammo. I have a lot of experience with .223 but someone said that was not a legal deer caliber here in Michigan

i personally like 243 but yes 22 centerfire is legal(and very effective)in tx. i shoot federal trophy bonded bearclaw in 223 and federal 85gr bthp in 243. with 243 he can sight in with one round and take either. as mentioned before the 22-250 with factory federals are awesome also. it kills way better than it should

I don't know what kind of experience your friend has, how much he will be practicing, and so on, but I think you're on the right track.  I would opt for the 25-06.  While the .243 will certainly do the job, if it would be a marginal caliber for your friend, I would overgun rather than undergun.  Both should be pretty available over the counter.

Unless your friend is a very good shot and really picky about bullet placement (and disciplined enough to pass on marginal shots), I'd probably go bigger than 22-250.  My personal thoughts.

Yep! Go with the 25/06. A good 100 gr. bullet will work for both or you can work up two loads. One with a 75 or 85 gr. bullet for coyotes and one with a 115 or 120 gr. for deer. Either way its a good round.

25-06.  It is about as good a round as you can get for the range of varmints to deer.
