My 45 BC got its first notch yesterday
« on: October 25, 2010, 03:31:28 PM »
went hunting with new 45 BC yesterday and got my first deer ever with a rifle.  so far the only deer i've shot has been with buckshot.  i haven't gotten to hunt very much so i'm still inexperienced. had a deer come out on a two rut road about 45 yds from my stand, got the gun up and the crosshairs on the shoulder, pulled the hammer back, and would you know, when i went to pull the trigger the darn deer took off. the shot went bad, right through ribs.  but what suprised me was with shot through  the gut, that 260 gr grizzly bullet knocked that deer clean off it's feet. i could see it happen with a shot to a solid shoulder but a clean pass through the gut,  that impressed me. had to track the deer about 125 yds and it ended up being a small 6 pt buck.

any way,  that was my first deer with a rifle , a handi-rifle, and it was my first buck so all in all it was a good day. now that the 45 BC has the taste of blood, maybe i can add a few more notches before the end of the season.

Congrats!!!! There is nothing like your first buck!

I have one rifle that my grandfather started using 50 years ago and notching the stock for every deer he killed and I continued the tradition when I got it! It sits in my living room by my recliner for pests and other things that need killing fast. Often times guests ask "What did you do to that poor rifle" then I get to tell them about it feeding the family in hard times and they just sit and wonder.

I also started that with a 30-30 I got new and put a leather sling on. Started notching the sling on it. Every notch means something to me and my family.

Enjoy your venison!

Congrats on the buck and dont worry about the less than perfect shot... it happens to all of us. The important thing is that you recovered the deer.

You're one up on me.  My Handi .45 hasn't tasted venison yet, but it will.,,,,,,,I hope.  It is a sweet little rifle.
