Classic Hunter 6 incher bought in Early 90's
« on: October 25, 2010, 04:43:55 PM »
What would be a good price for one that has been fired maybe 200 round and taken well care of?
Unfluted cylinder and full underlug barrel.

Is it the one with the four position adjustable front sight like the 10-5/8" Silhouette model had? If so I picked up one new a long time ago and that had to be the least accurate S&W I ever owned. Shame really as otherwise it was a nice gun and I'm sure S&W would have made it right had I held onto it and sent it back.

I'll admit tho the adjustable front sight seemed a bit over the top for a 6" gun.

OK then Blue Book says it is worth $575 if 100% or $475 in 98% or $395 in 95% going on down to a low of $240 in 60% condition.

Few guns unless still NIB and not even all of them really are truly 100% so a really nice unfired one is generally gonna run around 98% and if it's been fired it will have to be really well cared for to go 95%.

These days a lot of folks seem to place way too high a value on their firearms and that's fine and they can try to get it but it won't be from me. It would have to strike me as being in that 95% to 98% range for me to put $450 in it and even then it would have to be one I really wanted.

Blue Book prices the Silhoutte model about $100 on average higher than the gun you are looking at for each condition level. I'd really like to have another but awhile back when a member had one he was wanting about $250-$300 more for it than Blue Book says it's worth NIB and his was well used and at least third hand. We were never able to reach an agreement on price so I passed on it. I offered more than I honestly felt it worth because I really did want it.

It depends.  You don't say what model it is.  S&W made classic hunters in both the L frame .357, as well as a stainless and a blued .44 mag version.  I believe the blue model 29 was made one year only in 1989. the stainless 629 version in 1990, also one year only.  I have the 629 version, and its accurate and well made.  I think they were limited to 2500 of each model in the 44 mag version.

I made an assumption it was the blued M29 .44 mag. But you are right there are other possibilities it could have been I guess.

There is no listing in Blue Book for a 629 Classic Hunter. Classic and Classic DX yes but nothing called a classic hunter. I don't recall one from back then either but that doesn't mean it didn't happen as I'm not a S&W collector just a S&W shooter tho I did try to keep up with what was offered in those days to the extent I could.

686-3 Classic Hunter 6" .357 along with 629-2 Classic Hunter 3" .44

Worth every penny!  ;D

The .44 mag CH's were available in 3", 6", and 8-3/8" varieties and were produced during the late 80's - early 90's.

I believe they offered the Classic Hunter in .357, .41 and .44 configs. I recently bought this 5" seven shot smooth cyl 686-6 .357 Classic hunter from a friend who had 2 of these new in the box (back to back s/n's) and also a 686-1 ? (1988 model) with a 6" barrel and 6 shot smooth cyl.  Three of my co-workers have .41's in the same config. The guy wanted to keep the older one but that was fine with me as I really like the one I bought. My son may try and get the other one from him later on.
