tip off mounts
« on: October 18, 2010, 05:10:46 PM »
I have a chance to purchase a mannlicher schoenauer 1950 a a fairly good price. The rifle has a "tip off mount". Does anyone know whether that type of mount is solid enough in not losing zero?

Weaver did or does make a tip off mount. Would that be the one you are referring too? I had a set on a model 70 at one time and never had problems with the zero. However having said that if the mount on your 1950MS isn't weaver then possibly its a european type and as such would be just as good. I believe EAW at one time offered a set of rings and special bases for the MS series of rifles. You could google tip off mounts and see what you come up with. Frank

Doesn't "tip-off" generally refer to the mounts that clamp onto a .22's grooved  reciever?
For your M/S, since the reciever bridge is slotted to allow the bolt to move to the rear, I think that they usually use some kind of side mount base. Maybe the seller is thinking of the Weaver "pivot mount", which allows the scope to be swung out of the way, in order to use iron sights ( kind of common back in the day when scopes were not real reliable..weather proof ). Pachmeyer ( sp ?) also made a pivot style, and Williams made alot of side mounts for various rifles.
In any event, if the mounting system appears to be of good quality, not something "bubba-ized" to fit, it should work fine, I would think.

The mounts for the M-S I've seen used a standard type front mount and a rear mount that attached to the side of the rear and arched over the top to provide a place to attach the rear ring mount. Brownells websight may show them if the are still available.. The rifles are really very well made...

If it can be had relatively inexpensively, I wouldn't dwell/care one second on/about the scope mount - just deal with any possible issues later.

I have to agree with Rangr44, if the rifle is available for a decent price buy it and post pics here and someone will surely
help you out. Redfield at one time did make a set of rings and bases for these rifles. Frank
