Scope Choices for new rifle.
« on: October 22, 2010, 12:00:15 PM »
I just purchased my first hunting rifle and now I'm trying to find a good scope without spending too much money. The rifle is a Tikka T3 Lite 25-06. I was looking at the
Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 and Leupold VXII 3-9x40.

Any suggestions would help out alot.

I can't speak for the Bushnell but I have a Leupold 3x9 and really like it. It has better eye relief and while may not be needed on the 25-06 you may want to use it on something else later. Shortish eye relief is the only negative I've read or heard of about the Bushnell.

Does Bushnell make the elite 4200s in 3-9x now?  It used to be 2.5x-10x in the 4200 series because the 3200 series had it in 3x-9x.

When you compare the 4200 to VX-II you are comparing apples to oranges.  A better comparison is the 4200 to the VX-III.  I know why are you are comparing the 4200 to the VXII - because they are about the same price.  However, quality for quality, the 4200 is in the same class as the VX-III.

Check out the vortex vipers on clearance at swfa.  They are better than the VXII and sell for less than a VXI.  The warranty is every bit as good as the leupold warranty.  I would choose the 4200 over the VXII but Bushnell's customer service dept has a bad reputation.

Vortex 2-7x32 Viper Rifle Scope - $169.95
Vortex 3.5-10x50 Viper Rifle Scope - $239.95
Vortex 4-12x40 Viper Rifle Scope - $239.95

4200 is a great scope and I would put the glass a notch above the VX2. Both make a great scope for the money but I would lean towards the 4200 with the added Rainguard feature.

Take a second and look at this scope....it is a lot more scope for less money than the two scopes you asked about.  I own this scope and Japanese optics in it are really quite good and you'll like the SF and pullup turrets.
Please note, there is a $100 rebate on this scope.  Check out the other model scopes available.
