I believe putting up your own fur makes you money
« on: October 24, 2010, 11:36:23 AM »
I called Tom,Bogmaster, with an order today. We talked about lots of stuff.I told him I always thought putting up your fur made you money in the long run,he agreed. The problem is you can produce way more fur than you can keep up with.I'm going to buy more stretchers and fur handling equipment. My goal is to improve the quality of my fur. That's my goal for this fall.
I love the smell of coyote gland lure early in the morning. It smells like victory!!

I've been putting my fur up for over twenty years. Took me a few years to get consistant at it where my furbuyer wanted it. Took some finished furs to another buyer and he docked me for having the hides the way the other buyer wanted them. Turns out that guy was just making excuses to buy them at a lower price. Needless to say that guy went out of business pretty fast. Its a lot of work, but it is pretty cool when you take them to a buyer who appreciates the work it takes and pays for it.

yeppers , putting up your own fur properly , you can sell to whoever you want  at any time ; with properly dried stretched fur you can refuse low ball offers . BUT it pays to know what your fur is worth so you dont expect more than fur is worth .  Learning how to put up fur properly is one thing , learning what your fur is worth is another and important part of selling and being a trapper.

The one aspect of putting up fur--it gives you leverage when selling to local buyers.By that I mean--if you don't like what they offer, you can just pick up your furs and leave.Green or carcasssed fur that has been thawed out can leave you at a disadvantage. If you do not like a buyers offer-- you can only refreeze stuff so many times.
A good relationship with your buyer also helps. I have been selling to a buyer for over 30 years, he knows my fur and how I handle it. Before I head out for beaver trapping, I already know what I will be paid for them.
