1894 sights
« on: November 13, 2010, 12:25:15 PM »
I just bought a 1894 in .44mag that has a 3x9x40 simmons scope on it and i think i'd really rather have  good set of iron sights on it.  Anybody have any suggestions on this from personal experience?  Don't really think i'll need a scope for a short range gun,   maybe a good peep sight?

With my older eyes I need a scope. Are the sights gone? I might have a few old 1894 sights floting around somewere.

It still has the factory semi-buckhorn sights, they're just not my favorite choice.  Kinda wonderin' about a ghost ring or something similar.  Mainly gonna use the gun for deer in thick woods and maybe the occasional hog, I've got a .243 and a .300wsm for my long range needs.  ;D

I use XS Sight sys peep sights on both my 1984 44 mag and it's bigger brother 1895 45/70. Love them and everyone that has tried either gun can shoot them fine.

Williams I know, and maybe Lyman, make some excellect bolt on receiver sight, with "fiber-optic"  reticles.  My experience with XS sights  as an LEO was not good. They did not give a precise sight picture for what we needed.  The local SO SWAT ditched them.  My Marlin 1894 .357 and Ruger .44 Mag Carbine both wear Williams sights.  Another rifle I worked on also uses Williams fiber-opic sights on a .35 Rem lever action.  There are also reciever sights, available to fit pe-drilled slots on your actions, that are scary-accurate.  Check some google-based searches on what you want.

Some time back I put a Williams peep sight on my Win 94.  Going back to old-school.    So far so good.

There was a fella making a peep sight for the 1894 and 1895 that screws on existing holes on top of receiver.. He was on E-bay.. I bought one but have not installed it..  Thinking about a scope instead..

You know, i think i might just try makin' a peep sight myself. :P  I looked at a friend of mines marlin with a side mounted williams peep and i think i can pull it off.  If it works out ok i'll put up some pics for show and tell, if it don't work out i'm the only one to complain to!  Thanks to all for the help and suggestions!
