« on: October 28, 2010, 10:14:59 AM »
I finally got my 35 whelen back from repairs b/c of failing to fire isssues.  Now I am wondering what is the best ammo to run through the gun for whitetails?  Will be shooting out to 300 yards max.  Whats yalls opinions?

Whitetails are pretty easy to kill, and the 200-grain Remington factory ammo has worked very well for me - it's a bang-plop proposition!  Some folks have been experiencing some problems with Remington's factory ammo for the Whelen, and recommend Federal - if you can find it.

I've shot lots of deer with my whelen using 250gr. Core Lokts.
They go down like they got hit in the head with a sledgehammer.

Whitetails are easy to kill, all you have to do is hit them with a good shot.  The .35 caliber bullet is devastating for something that small, no matter what weight bullet you use.  Even the 185gr pistol bullets will do the trick.

My Dad used the Remington 250gr Coreloket bullet for his Moose.  One shot, dead Moose.  I also used the same load for an Emergency shot at a charging Grizzly.  One shot Bang Flop.

Have heard some reports of the Remington Primers being hard to set off, causing FTF.  I used up that one box of Remington shells I had bought without any problems, but I personally reload using CCI primers, and Nosler bullets now.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I would be careful with pistol bullets in the Whelen they do some strange thing at those velocities (like blow up on contact) Ask me how I know. I like 200-225 grainers the 180 rifle bullet isn't bad

The deer wont know the difference, just find something that goes off every time and plot the trajectory for it (so you have confidence in what it will do) and go for it.
