Best and Worst????
« on: October 23, 2010, 03:24:07 PM »
I've been reading through some old posts (I'm on page 27!) and was curious as to which you folks would consider the best (most reliable, versitile and free from defects) and worst (poorest accuracy, most defects, needs most tinkering, etc) of the Handis.
From what I've been reading so far, it appears that the 45/70 is a very strong competitor for the best all around, and the .243 seems to suffer the most complaints.
How close am I??

The 35 Whelen might give the .243 some serious competition as one of the worse. I would say that the 30-30 and 45-70 are amongst the very best. ;)

I have the handi in .223 and 357 mag/maxi and they have both been very accurate right out of the box. The 25-06 was another story, I could only manage 1 1/2" groups with that one. :o  ;D

I would put the 45/70 and pistol bullets at the top, heck better throw in the 30-30 too I think the rest it just depends on who was throating what on a given day

+1 on the straight wall rimmed cartridges and good accuracy.  The 444 Marlin has been the best of the bunch for me and it is of new manufacture, Illion Gun.   The 45 calibers are my favorite to shoot.

My 223 Ultra is the most finicky, accuracy wise, but always goes off.  I have a 270 Win with lug issues but I think it may have been abused by a previous shooter.

I side with Spanky!!!  ::) ;D ;)

For a top caliber, the 30-30 time and time again shows why its lasted one hundred and fifteen years!! Not to sell the one hundred and fourty five year old 45/70 short!! It's also has a big, well deserved following. (I prefer the 45/70 to the 30-30 but that wasn't your question.  ;) )

For a problem accuracy caliber, I'll say the 500 S&W and most of the 243 Super lights. We all know Tim has a shooter and I'm certain it's not the only one.

I own 2 Handis.  A .243 standard contour barrel that has been fitted to a Survivor frame.  I have shot sub MOA with it.  Don't shoot it much anymore, but my 11 year old boy does, and he shoots sub MOA with it.

The other Handi I own is a 45-70 BC.  I have only shot 1 box of ammo through it, but I love it.  I am currently shooting 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" groups at 100 yards.

Bottom line, I don't know what the worst is, but I am very impressed with the 2 Handis I have.

Thanks.

Tim

My old 44 and the 357 were the worst and the 45/70 and new 44 mag are the best.

The best for me has been the .223 Supelight, .357 Max Talo and 45/70 Talo, the worst had to be a 7mm-08 and a .308 Survivor.

Best for me is tied - I bought the .45/70 Handi and my first barrel was .30-30.  Both very, very accurate.  I bought a .223 normal barrel.  It is accurate - no complaints.  It was my .243 that caused me to pull my hair ... I got the 20" barrel with iron sights, just to use as a truck gun for varmints.  It took me awhile to sight it in.

My 270 shoots minute of Deer! at 100 yds or a little farther. It aint the long range shooter that I was hoping for.
The 243 closet queen is just that! The 223 will shoot nats at 100 yds!  ::) I dunno, I'm not the biggest fan.
