Help with weapon choice
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:41:17 PM »
??? I want first of all to build a 1/2 MOA rifle, would like a cross over rifle for possible tactical match rifle use and 600 yard rifle.  with an occasional 1000 yd match.  I am aware that no one rifle will do everything well.  I do not have enough finances to build a custom precision rifle either.  Don't you'll like it when someone has a question then puts all these limiting factors.  Sorry but figured you'll may need a challenge.

Around $2,000 for rifle and scope.

Looking at

Factory rifles - Remington or Ruger target/varmint rifles, 6.5 creedmoor, or 243 Win, last choice 308 (Savage 12 in 6.5x284 but expensive)

Action first with a custom barrel, Montana Rifles 1999 (copy of Win 70) or CZ 550, long action 6.5x55 ackley improved

Savage 12 target is a great action from what I hear but they look like crap (personal opinion) and how well do their three part bolts hold up?

So many choices so many calibers, I love accurate rifles and just want to get started, I may be able to squeeze out $2,500 but that would be it for rifle, scope and ammo (reloading dies and brass/bullets etc).

I will not be a threat to any of you'll at an official match but would like to at least experience the fun without looking completely inept.

Thanks Old Moss

Can't help much here as my experience is primarily with military service rifles, but I do own a hard-to-find Ruger Target/Varmint in .308.  Smooth action, nice adjustable trigger, and holds 1.5 MOA  with foreign surplus ammo.  Good ammo is great for a factory rifle.  Needs good glass to really come alive.  Been thinking about selling and getting a quality .308 barrel for my Encore.  Would be a great platform to get started on if you're interested.

A good AR15 should do what you want to 600 yards.  At 1000 yards the wind will be a problem for the AR15.  The wind is a problem for everybody so I shoot anyway.  You will need a barrel with a 1-7 twist.

AR15 lower receiver assembly plus Geissele trigger, a tacticle upper receiver assemble, and a White Oak Armament service rifle upper receiver assembly  = $1500.  For a match rifle upper receiver and sights add another $1000.

In the UK the AR15 platform is used by disabling the gas system and converting it to straight-pull operation.  That may work for you.

My condolences, Old Moss.

This politically incorrect American of Mexican descent had the displeasure of living in the Kalifornia People's Republik for approximately 1 year (it felt like 10). I had to leave my semi-auto rifles and handguns in storage in Arizona and was stopped twice by cops to see if I was carrying "illegal" weapons because I had a pro-gun bumper sticker on my truck.

Freedom is just across the state line in Nevada and Arizona. I hope someday you can break-out of there, because achieving freedom in that police state through the voting process appears to be very difficult.

Regards,
Joaquin B.:cb2:

the AR15 is NOT out of the question for kalifornika. There are special stocks made to get around the pistol grip prohibition. Sorry, can't think of them right now. Will check back when I do.

I came back. Check californiarifles.com . they build complete Kalifornika legal ARs and sell KA. legal stocks.

Also check riflegear.com  . They carry the " Monster Man Grip AR" which is a legal non-pistol type grip. Look low in the item description and you will find a link to

"Building a California legal AR15 rifle."

This should get you on the way to a 'legal' AR15 type rifle for the Pipples Demokratik Socialist Republik of Kalifornia.

 :) Good evening all,

Well it took a while but she is done!  Here is what i went with, Ruger 77 Target, in 6.5 Creedmoor, 28" Bbl, stock completely refinished & reshaped in a few spots; action cleaned up and polished/tuned; fully glass bedded; Sightron 6x24x50 MD tactical scope.

First 10 rounds were breaking in the barrel, cleaned after every shot the target is below, first 5 rds played with the scope a bit, last seven rounds went into 5/8", last 5 rds went into 1/2".  Factory ammo Hornaday 140gr V-Max.  I am excited to say the least.  Will continue with breaking in my barrel with another 10 rds cleaning after every 2 shots.

Thanks for all your inputs, can't wait till my first 600yd match.  Still have a lot to learn.  Thanks Old Moss

Best regards, be safe, and keep your powder dry!
Thanks Old Moss

sounds like a great rifle! i know i am a little late, but i just read an article that of all factory rifles produced, the author found the howa 1500 sub-moa rifle to be the closest to any long range rifle produced. said that fewer modifications were made to it then any other rifle to get his 1000 yrd. desired results. he tried remington, salvage, and ruger if i remember correctly. maybe someone can benefit from this.

If you would like an AR for CA. check out Shotgun news they list several guns and lots of uppers . The stock is made so its not a pistol grip , talk about poor gun control . Check our M&A , parts inc. online . Read their imformation on Kits and laws etc. its alot of good stuff.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

What about a Remington 5R in .308 and play from there?
