Oversize chambered .45 Colt
« on: November 01, 2010, 07:22:45 AM »
I'm sure this has been covered before. My .45 Colt barrels chamber is oversize. Shot it yesterday with some Ruger level handloads. The the fired cases won't come close to chambering in my Super Redhawk. I was planning to rechamber to .454. Will this help or hurt? Thanks

I may be wrong, but logic tells me reaming it out to .454 should solve the problem.  The bore stays the same, and you just adjust the chamber to fit.  It might just cure your problem.  The 454s won't load in the
Redhawk though.  The strange thing is my .45 drives tacks.  It's an HX serial number.

I haven't shot mine for accuracy yet.  Yesterday was the first trip to the range using some .45 Colts I handloaded for a Blackhawk that I don't have anymore. I don't mind keeping brass for both guns separate. Gonna be a fun little gun.

Both shells are the same diameter so a 454 reamer will make the chamber longer but not tighter and thats what your problem sounds like.

I had 2 badly oversize HX chambered .45 colts.  I kept sending them back and finally got a HY chamber that is spot on.  I can unload and directly drop the fired brass into my Blackhawk.  Depending on the support where you got it, might want to fight for a better one.  The .454 is only .002 larger diameter if I understand correctly, so if it is large enough to not chamber in your Ruger, reaming to .454 probably won't cut it.  8(  If it's in that .002 range, .454 might be the fix, but your Colt brass, if you shoot them, will also blow out still.  8(

Bought the barrel used so probably not much support from H&R. I don't really care if the brass won't work in the Redhawk as long as the oversize chamber doesn't cause me any problems other than maybe shortening case life.  Would partially sizing the cases help with this by not working the brass as much?

km,

Yes it could help to partially re-size.  Make a couple of dummy rounds and see.

Yah, as Catshooter stated, partial sizing would aid in keeping life longer.  When I had my over sized ones, I set aside 20 brass just for the Carbine.  I also bought a second bag of 100 to have on hand to replace them if they started cracking or separating.  With the bang and tap, you might have a bit of difficulty getting the brass a consistent distance into the die.  If you seem to have inconsistent accuracy, you might buy a hand press and deluxe .45 colt die set from Lee for about 70 bucks and then you can set the resizing die wherever you need to.  You can also for 8 bucks pick up a universal decapping die which eradicates the need to use the full length resizing die to de-cap your brass.  I have one of those coming in with my latest die order tomorrow myself.  This is also nice if you are using fireformed brass for making shot loads or round ball loads, which I like playing with.  ;)

If the brass extracts OK dont resize at all. Decap (and thats where the Lee Universal Decapper is nice) and fit a cast lead bullet to the case mouth as fire-formed. It may be .454 or so, but no worries, it will probably shoot great. Brass will last, reloading is super-easy and you will be one happy shooter (ask me how I know).

Out of curiousity, I got the carbine and the Redhawk out and tried the spent cases again. They slide in easily into the carbine chamber but will go into the Redhawk chambers all but about 1/4" to the rim.  Measured them with my caliper and compared them to some mild loads fired out of a Blackhawk. About .001" difference in them.  Doesn't seem like much to me.

IMHO that is good news....not too horrible bad and shouldnt give you much grief in the reloading. Even so, try my no-resizing method if you can stand to mess with cast bullets (about all Ive used for too many years to count) and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for all the info, guys.  I bought this barrel with the intent on reaming it to .454 Casull to compliment my Super Redhawk.  I'm just waiting on the reamer to arrive.  I did get to chrony some loads yesterday and was impressed.  250gr XTP that did 1350fps in the 7.5" Redhawk barrel did 1700 in the carbine. Recoil was really mild too. Can't wait to try some .454s out of it.  Kevin
