7-30 Waters Super 14
« on: November 25, 2010, 08:11:31 AM »
I have a G2 w/ super 14 7-30 Waters barrel.  I had a muzzle brake put on, which makes the barrel exactly 16 inches with the brake on.  They did a great job on the brake.  As a result, I am setting it up as a carbine.  A couple of questions..where can I get a forend that will fit this barell screw configuration that is like a carbine forend, or, are all of  the screw configurations the same regardless of barrel length?  Also, I do not reload and cannot find ANYONE with this ammo in stock.  Anyone have any idea where I can by ammo..reloaded, etc.?  Also, what would you estimate the range limitations to be with this setup?  I'm liking it for hunting from treestand where compact is important and coyote's medicine

Have you tried  the usual,   Midway, Midsouth Graff and Sons.   Cabelas or Gander MTN can go on computer and find out if any of their other stores have or try local gunshop to see if they can order it. ASFAIK only Federal is producing factory loads.

If you are needing a specific reload, I would search the web for someone who does custom reloading. I can not think of the name at the moment. There are shops set up just for that. Good luck. I will check when I get home and see if I have any of them saved on my computer.

I've tried all of the obvious ..BPS, Cheaper Than Dirt, Sportsmans Guide, Midway, Cabelas, Gander Mt, etc.  Reeds is the last place I ordered it from and they are not making any anytime soon.  I actually placed an order with them two months ago that still has not been filled.  I sent them an email and their response was that they would fill it sometime , but did not plan on working up 7-30 for some time.  I guess my order was not big enough...LOL

Federal Premium is the only big name maker that I know of that still makes 7-30 Waters ammo.  I haven't looked this year, but I normally see it at Gander Mountain or other major hunting/fishing stores, frequently deeply discounted after deer hunting season.

It wouldn't hurt to place a WTB ad here on GBO.  You never know, someone might have a few boxes they could part with.  I reload mine and make my brass from 30-30 so I don't have any experience trying to find factory ammo (except that I have seen it on the shelf locally over the years and always shook my head at the prices).

Your best bet is at a large gun show with a vender that sells ammo, someone that has all cal. not someone who has a few boxes. Federal is the only factory loader and only in 120 grn. call or contact the factory they will help you. If you were near me in Tulsa area I could help you but dont wont to try and ship live ammo.

About the forend question....since you had the brake put on and that made it 16", I assuming this was originally a 14" pistol barrel and would require a pistol forend to fit the screw spacing.  The screw spacing is shorter on pistol barrels than on the 16" and longer barrels.  If that is the case and you want to use a carbine type forend, you would have to cut a new dovetail or go to a custom forend. ;)
