uses for a butterfly knife

well i got this knife sometime ago cuase it looked good for 15$. what can i use it for?  I thinking maybe i can use it for hunting or fishing.

In a lot of states one of its uses is a trip to jail.

A good quality balisong is THE strongest folding knife available.  My first was a ca. 1987 Benchmade.  While of high quality, its edge profile made it difficult to obtain a usable edge.

there legal here for hunting and other non pocket carry uses. As long as it not used as a weaopn your ok . So my knife is just something to look at? i can't use it for any hunting or fishing uses?

If it'll take an edge and it's legal, then it can be used in some function. My only exposure to them was in the Philippines; and over there they used them as utility EDC's and to stab the odd neighbor who just irritated you ;D

It looks like it would be a good digger, if your into metal detectin, or perhaps to remove a hubcap from a car wheel.

I always liked the way folks took that extra 2-3 seconds to concentrate on flipped them around and open.  It gives me extra time to focus on my front site......;)

I bought a cheapo way back when because I thought they looked cool.  I used it to put small cuts on my hands playing around with it.  Now it sets in my toolbox in case I need some I can abuse that has an edge.  Like a lot of things, it's fun until it hurts you.

I have a Benchmade (you wouldn't beleive how they're worth now) I got back when I was in the Marines and carried it extensively. I was blessed with a corperal that studied them quite a bit and showed me how one was properly used. The flipping around yuh see in the movies yes will get you killed. Use one the way it was intended and the person won't time to even get their hand on the gun. The only way the person would know it was used would be that their cut. Like stated they are illeagal in most states. I see them more as a defensive weapon then as a hunting knife, can one be used as such hell yeah the well made butterflys aka balisongs are very rugged knives.

I think the emerson pocket knives with the wave feature are a much better alternative for anyone looking for a fast opening pocket knife.  I bought one before deployment and it served me well and is still built like a tank.  Here's a video to show how the wave feature can be used to open the knife as it's coming out of the pocket.

I carry all the time my CRKT m16z or my outdoor life pocket knife. I can get those both open faster then my butterfly knife.  Really i don't see the point of these knifes beside the cool look of them.  For a  defensive weapon i would carry a 6'' or 4'' cold steel Ti-Lite or a Snap On Tools Folding Pocket Knife.

Like I said the proper use of a butterfly it's just as fast as any spring assisted knife. also it was designed to be closed in the hand make the cut and be closed again in all one motion. it's hard to explain but to each their own.

I'll have to agree with that.  I've watched Filipino's, who grow up using the knife, open and close it so quickly it's scary.  Any skill takes practice.

Mine is razor sharp,sturdy and opens one handed. I have used it to cut rope,clean fish,slice veggies and take the sleeves off of a shirt on a hot day. It will work for about anything and I would be happy to have mine in a bind. If you have it use it. I happen to like other knives for all the same purposes though. The other guys made a good point don't take a knife to a gun fight.
