45-70... need a R7 load close to the factory 405 Gr.
« on: October 19, 2010, 08:39:24 AM »
I like the factory 405 grain JSP from Remington in the 45-70 at 1330 fps.

But I'd like to bump the velocity up maybe 10% to 15% up to about 1500 fps, using Reloder 7, and the same Remington 405 gr. bullet.  Using a 22 inch barrel.

None of the data I have matches that result and I even see some conflicting data on the velocity from 40 grains.  And those usually show 400 grain jacketed bullets.

Can you guys refresh me on the Reloder 7 loads that will get me near the 1500fps with this Rem 405 gr. JSP?

Do you think the increased recoil will be substantial over the factory load?

AND... how would you adjust that load to keep the same 1500fps if I move to a WIN magnum primer?

Thanks!

Try 36 gr of RL7 under the 405 jacketed bullet for a factory duplication load.  38 - 39 gr will probably put it close to 1500 fps.

This is bases on tests of RL7 under the Speer 400 gr bullet out of my 26" barreled H&R OM.  The loads also check out ok in Lyman's manual.

I don't load 405's but I have loaded as low as 34.3 gr. RL7 with no issues or FTF on them.  Get a little soot down the sides if I go any lower, but with the bigger bullet, you can probably get to 31 gr. without soot.  ;)

I cast a 405 grain bullet for my 45-70's.  And I use RL-7.  My best load is 40.0 grains of RL-7.  And this has an average velocity of 1600 fps in my 45-70's.  Tom.

Thanks.  I need to match the 405 grain JSP load, and then find one around 1500fps with REL 7 (or 4198.)  I tried REL 7 at 36 grains and it seemed to be a little stiffer than the factory round.  I don't have a chrono.  Does anyone else have a REL 7 load that they know is close to factory 1330 fps?  CCI200 primer.

And does anyone else know for sure what REL 7 is needed to get 1500fps with the 405 grain jacketed?

Good fun.  Thanks.

Taco
This load is taken from Speer Manual# 13, Page 412 for their 400 gr FN. I don't think the extra 5 grains bullet weight of The Rems is going to make a diference.

Minimum load   41,0 gr RL 7  for 1494 fps
Maximum load   45.0 gr RL-7 for 1681 fps
Note: The max load listed above is for Trapdoor Pressure. You can cerainly put more powder into the case for higher V's.

Thanks.  That's the same Speer manual I have, and the data conflicts with the Alliant book I have for R7 on the lower loads.  I'll have to post the specifics when I get home to the books.

Added later:
Speer 13th manual: 400gr JSP with 41 gr. REL7 = 1493 fps.
Alliant guide 2005: 400 gr JSP with 40 gr. REL7 = 1580fps.

Not sure what's up with that.

I am hoping someone with a chrono had some actual loads to report at about 1330fps and 1500fps?

Depending on firearm, brass and primer how much crimp those two figures aren't all that far apart. Anybody that actually has measured the V  for h i s rifle may have gotten different results again and those may very well be not the same for yours.

My best milder 45/70+405 Rem+RL7 is 42.0grs
