Just bought an Optima
« on: November 05, 2010, 05:45:24 AM »
Just got a new Optima 209 today.  I'm impressed with the workmanship for sure.  If this thing is as clean and accurate as I've been reading, the old dirty @$$ super tack driving Knight will be the back-up.  My only question is, how in the world did I end up with 5 muzzleloaders?!?

Well mine is lights out now out to 200 yards. I shot several groups the other day with it and the last was at 200. At 100 yards I can keep an honest 1.25" three shot group with no cleaning between shots. The group at 200, zeroed dead on at 100, was about 8" low so I can hold dead on with my second mil-dot and shot a 3" group. This was out of a lead sled. Off hand I can keep 2.5" at 100 yards and would not attempt a 200 yard shot.

It is as clean as I expect a ML to be. The breech plug comes out with a twist of the hand even after I shot 18 shots. Soaked in solvent and wiped off and looked brand new.

How's the recoil?  The hollow light stock has me concerned about it with magnum loads. At 8# +, I could probably shoot the Knight off of my forehead.

If its the new Optima, it will handle recoil nicely.  Opening day for 3rd season elk just started today and after a day in the mountains, im not hurting from carrying the rifle.

Hillbill, I'd still love to get ahold of a pristine small caliber Cherokee, and a long rifle rock lock, but they'd probably be safe queens!

Bigblock, it is the new model.  I love this thing, but won't get to shoot it for a few more days.  I only have a small woodlot and with the rut in  full swing, I need to concentrate on roaming bucks more than BP loads.  Haven't pulled the shoulder pad off, but am thinking of putting a ziplock baggie full of dry sand in it, then filling it with expanding foam.  Funny, but I can't handle heavy recoil at the range for more than a few shots, but feel nothing when dropping the hammer on a deer.  I think 12 ga deer slugs ruined me years ago and have hunted with ML's only for 12 years now (I even successfully used a T/C Black Diamond on a guided Alabama hunt).
