big gun little gun smaller gun
« on: February 07, 2011, 02:23:05 AM »
Ok for those who decided that a hand gun was the way to go in a time of SHTF consider this. What would you think of a full size gun , mid size gun and compact gun in your kit or any two ? A small 38 and larger 357 mag would be nice but weight or cost would be a problem for some of us. I'm not a Glock head but do realize they offer some pluses. They don't weigh alot and they are cost effective , more so on the used gun market. With the Glock larger mags could be used in smaller guns keeping number of extra mags lower. Add a 22 conversion kit and you have a nice set up.
Any thoughts ? any other guns that might fit ?

Why not go with a S&W 686 with a  4" barrel?  .357 mags and .38 specials will do all you would need.

That would work but the airweights would lessen the load .

What is the exact roll that this handgun will play?
Are we talking long term or short term SHTF?

It could be either long term or short trip. Long term it could be a hide out incase your primary weapon was taken. In New Oleans and in Fl. when the storms hit people walking around with weapons exposed had them taken. If you had a small gun as back up it might not get taken. Then in long term SHTF you may need to hide a gun off body before entering into certian areas to aquire food or medical help . The role would be an extra insurance , it could supply 80% of the parts to repair the larger gun in the case of a Glock. It could use same ammo also and mags. On a trip the small gun could be stashed in the travel vehicle incase the primary weapon was lost or stolen .

I agree with the small gun for SHTF situations. I certainly would not give up a long gun by choice though. In a SHTF scenario I believe it would be a good idea to be transparent to both the "bad guys" and to what authority is available. Concealing a handgun is the best option if transparency is the goal. An openly carried gun will be confiscated, one way or another it won't be mine forever. Have no illusions you won't be stopping a determined thief, can you say bushwacked.

Look to Iraq / istan for your survival cues. Plenty of "bad guys" and plenty of authority to go around, and everybody is dying.

Short term I agree a low profile would be your best defense.
In that case a light weight concealable handgun would be very handy. I'll choose the Springfield XD 40 compact.
Long term I have other plans ;)

My actual rig is ...
Big ... 627PC (N Frame 8x357) strongside hip in enclosed leather holster with thumbstrap retention.
Medium - 1911A1 Govt .45 ACP
Small - AA Target .22 Conversion for 1911.

Medium or Small will ride cross draw or in pack, depending on my mood.

Some will be curious why I have the 357 as my big, and 45 as my med ... I factor range into the equation. On another thread, I think it was Shootall that established the average range of shot taken on deer this season was 80 yds, which the 357 will do nicely. The 45 is more my break contact weapon with 10 rd mags. The 22 is the handy one for chores for which a .38 is overkill. I have 4 common calibers covered in 2 weapons, and they're both ambidextrous.

For my selection the 627 w/ 5" is 44oz, which is the same as a 5/686 w/6". Drop an inch, gain 2 rds. It's heavier by 2 rds when loaded. Compared to a GP100 at 35oz for 4" or 44oz for 6".

The 1911 is 38oz. 22 slide is maybe 12, have to check. Compared to a glock 17 at 22 oz empty, the 1911 is a full pound heavier. I don't know if it levels out with a 17 rd mag in the glock vs 10 in 1911. If the pound were a big enough deal I might lighten here. Its not today.

I figure ammo as neutral in comparison since well be carrying similar boxes of 20, 50 or 100.

I agree about ammo in the gun or pocket you still tote it . I had not considered a 22 but the addition of a 22 slide and bbl set up on a Glock would be welcome.

Shootall, I'd think a Glock 23, plus a drop-in lone wolf conversion barrel for 9mm, and an AA Target 22 Conversion slide would be a handy "kit". Light, hi-cap, concealable - use 40 when you have it, 9mm when you find it. The 22 Target version is fairly good on a Glock, not Ruger level groups. But even with all that, I think you'd want a hunting pistol along side JIC. A conversion slide is lighter than another gun, unless you go airweight for a 22. I'd feel well covered with just the 627 and a 317.

If you're not looking for trouble, but it comes your way, the ability to break contact quickly is really where having a hi-cap semi-auto in your 2 or 3 handgun collection makes sense. But you gotta be willing and able to move. Keep a 33rd mag in the glock, quickly assault through a flank on an oblique and keep on going for a bit. Only the very well trained will want a second dose of that.

Good point, but not only that ...... Are we talking about the city where mobs or organized gangs might threaten with multiple targts who are out to rob, rape and murder?

Of in a suburban environment?

Or strictly a rural environment?  In which case climate, region and latitude would play a huge role in selections made?

I'd be inclined to choose a wheelgun as my primary only if I knew it was VERY UNLIKELY I would [possibly if at all] have to face multiple treats at the same time!

A .357Mag or .41Mag or .44Mag or .45Colt ......

vs.  a 9mm or .40S&W or .45ACP ......

In such a time one might be in urban and country enviroments , main reason for handguns not rifles all the time. I had a 317 to light to shoot steady for me , add lack of food and sleep the shakes will come ( why in most cases I see the shot gun as an advantage even with bulky ammo).
I like the revolver also though

I have no interest in the 5.8X28mm cartridge nor anything that shoots it, but when one remembers that horrific terrorist attack by the American-moslum ossifer and the number of casualties he caused with a pistol in that cartridge .....

Wouldn't that make a heckuva weapon in someone needed that kind of firepower?

Just askin'.  Just a thought.
