Ammunition
« on: November 02, 2010, 05:51:07 AM »
Not sure if this is the appropriate forum but, I see nothing better.  Yesterday at the range a gentleman had a brand new bolt rifle. I believe it was a Browning but, is irrelevant.  It was a 270 WSM, Winchester ammunition.  He had a failure to fire.  He brought the shell to me.  The primer was out of the case. The bullet still in the case.  The primer was later found in his magazine.  Upon closer examination it was discovered that when manufactured the flash hole was not punched through completely.  I have never seen this before.

I bought a bag of bulk Winchester brass in 300WSM.  One of the cases was a WSSM stamped billet run over a 300WSM sizer.  It resulted in a case that was grossly too short and probably too thin.  I sent it to Winchester.  Never heard anything back.  It pays to examine ammo.  Stuff happens.  I imagine the bad case I received resulted when machinery was being reset from a WSSM run to 300WSM and there was a piece of stock still in the machine.

The quality of the American made ammo has not been consistent these days.  I have had 3 squib loads in pistol ammo, and one of the guys at my gun club had several duds from new Remington .308 rifle ammo.  We figured the problems were with the Iraq/Afghan. war putting so much demand on the makers.  If I get another centerfire rifle, I think it would be wise to check the ammo visually after I buy it, although that won't help for squibs and duds.
