Current twist rate for .357 MAG?
« on: November 07, 2010, 02:53:34 PM »
I'm dreaming about a better mousetrap ::)......I checked the FAQs and it states 1-18 3/4" or 1-15 1/2". What are the current ones being twisted?  I would think that 1-15 1/2" would be fine for a 35 Whelen rechamber but not 1-18 3/4".

Thoughts?

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny, my .357 Mag. "Made in Ilion" has the 1:15-1/2" twist rate. Can't help ya with the other question.

Dinny, my Greenhill chart says a 1:19 twist is good for a max 237gr. bullet @ 1.01" long
and the 1:16 a max of 282gr. @ 1.19" long.
Hope this is helpful.

Dinny,

I've shot 250gr spitzers in my 1:16" RMEF Whelen with no problems at 100yds, dunno what they'd do at 200-300yds tho. I don't recollect anyone saying they had a 1:18¾" twist 357Mag barrel on the poll that we did once upon a time, not saying they don't exist, just that the source at H&R for the twist info may have been old H&R Inc info.

1:16" twist is probably the most versatile twist allowing for a wide weight range of bullets to be used. I can't imagine that the 1:15 1/2" twist would be all that bad. Perhaps a good gunsmith could cut a Whelen chamber with minimal headspace and increase the Whelen's functionality and reliability.

Given a decently straight, cleanly reamed and well rifled barrel, the most important work is properly chambering the thing. How well that is done determines if it will shoot well or not. Dont scrimp there!

That is a lesson that I have already learned. Fortunately I didn't learn it the hard way. My mother's .357 Max Handi was professionally reamed and throated with a specific bullet in mind. The throat was cut perfectly in-line with the bore. I actually shot several groups that were 5/8" at 100yds.

Thanks, Dinny

Good sons don't let their moms shoot 357 Magnums, it's gotta be a Maxi:D  ;)

She did tell me just the other day that the long bullets shot much better than the shorter ones.  ;D

Thanks, Dinny
