congrats on the new toy!  203gr sp sound like they could be pretty fun.  Ive had great luck with 180 gr bullets through mine.  i have a m44 and love it but i really want a 91/30 to go with it. all i seem to see are the hex receivers and i want a round one with laminate stocks.

Is there any [SA] markings on it or #41???  If so these were captured russian mosins from the russo/finn war of '39.  Either way you got an awesome gun for the cost, lots of history about them.

You got the mosin flu yet???  Congrats on your first one now lookout for more there addicting.  I stocked up on the barnaul 203gr soft point ammo many years ago when Cheaper than Dirt had it for $4.97 a box.  I figure i could just about hunt any four legged critter in north america with it.  My finnish mosin m39 VKT shot pretty good with the 203gr ammo and so did my svt-40 tokarev too. With the 91/30 that 29" barrel will surely reach out and touch something with the 203gr bullet i'm sure.                                     Czy

it doesnt have any of those markings on it and so far ive only shot to 200 yards with iron sights it is more accurate enough to hunt deer with.

These old war horses were mentioned on the "backwoods home site" as good affordable surplus rifles that can put meat on the table that are cost affective in my book too. I mentioned this before how crudely these were made but the conditions they were manufactured under are unbelieveable.  I seen pics of factories with no roofs with the workers in the cold weather running the machines to keep up with the war demand.  Plus there accurate too.  The old russian machinests were good.  Even the non scoped mosins that weren't chosen to be snipers can be accurate too.                                                                                                             11czy

well i got more ammo a couple days ago and went to finish my sighting in job the scope is a POS!!! the adjustment knob broke clean off the scope no repairs possible so i sat down changed it back to the original iron sights and at 100 yards it is about an inch and a half high with the 203 grain sp brown bear ammoand about a half an inch to the right but that isnt a big problem i can always tap it over with a brass punch and a hammer until it is right

Being 1 1/2" high at 100yds may put it at a 150yd or 200yd zero?  Thats great right were it is if you ever need a long shot.  I would just get it on dead center like you said.  You got a good mosin and with cheap affordable 203gr sp ammo its accurate too.

it is handy to be able to shoot accurately at longer ranges ive killed 2 deer in the last 5 years that have been under 150 yards most of them have been 200 to 250 yards i took a small buck at about 250 yards last year with my open sighted mauser converted to .308. but this mosin is much more accurate than the mauser its groups at 100 yards are half the size of the mausers 100 yard groups

The longer 29" barrels make it better to reach out and touch something more accurately.  Even though its like hunting with a telephone pole.

that is the truth its very long but handles quite comfortably anyway heavy but easy to shoot offhanded because of the weight

I like the longer barrels its like holding the antique muskets(they feel like cannons).

My collection includes:

91/30's, M44's and an M38

If you want a shorter version than the 91/30 for sneaking through the woods:

Get either a 91/59 or an M38

More recoil and a shorter sight radius but much more compact.

Get some light grease (I use Lubriplate No. 105, motor assy. grease) and lube your sear area and you'll like your Mosin even more!
