One of my buddies called me Wednesday and asked if I wanted to go shoot a hog early Thursday morning,,,,well you know what the answer was. H#LL yeah, I'm ready! The 454 Taurus and I "stay on ready" when it comes to hunting hogs.
Well he picks me up at about 5:30 and we head off to the club. He asked me what stand I wanted to climb up in and I tell him that it doesn't matter to me (because there are hogs all over the place at his club) Well, we keep it simple and leave the truck and 4-wheeler on the trailer and both of us walk to the stand where he thought we would do good.
Just between me and you, The stand he wanted me to go to I didn't have a lot of confidence in when it came to seeing a lot of hogs. My buddy has been hunting these woods for over 30 years,,,,I kept my mouth shut and went along with the program.
I climb up in the old wooden stand, get comfortable and wait. Nothing at all up until about 8:40, I look to my right and said,,,well Ill be dam,,,,here they come. There was three sows at about 100-125lbs each along with about 5-6 little piglets.
I reached for my ear muffs that I had sitting on the edge of the stand in front of me and slowly slide them over my ears. I then go for the gun (with a smile on my face) that's sitting in my lap while the hogs are heading for the pile of corn that we had put out the night before.
I slowly cock the hammer while looking at one of the blond sows in the scope that was about 35yds away,,,,,BOOM! I look up, and she is down on the ground! I cock the hammer again, swing over to one of the little pigs, BOOM,,missed, cock the hammer again, look and see another little one walking fast from left to right, BOOM,,,GOT'em! That little one squealed like crazy! I let the smoke clear and looked up to see the first sow that I shot had got up and was running into the woods. (You have got to be kidding me!) I couldn't get a good shot at her, so there was nothing I could do at that point.
While sitting there the little one I had hit in the rear was crawling off into the tall grass, I didn't think he would go far, so I didn't shoot at him again.
I had two shots left. I had a feeling that some of the hogs might return,,so I waited. I was right, two of the little guys were running around the area looking for who knows what, so I took two more shots,,,,needless to say, I missed again. (Those little suckers are hard to hit when they are about 35-40yds away)
I called my buddy on the phone, he could hear the shots from where he was at and asked me if I had five hogs on the ground,,,I laughed and told him that the two that I did hit had ran off, he thought I was kidding. I told him we had some tracking to do so he went and picked up the 4-wheeler and met me at the stand I was at.
Long story short, I could tell that I had hit the sow pretty good because of all the blood on the ground. We tracked for over 100 yards and called it off when the grass got so tall we couldn't see 10 feet in front of us.
Now for the fishing part of the story in the afternoon.
We loaded up the boat and headed for the Wando river at the first part of the outgoing tide. We were going to a spot up past the I-526 bridge where I knew had some keeper sized reds on it. Didn't take long and my buddy was hooked up on a good sized red while using live shrimp! This went on for about an hour with 12 red drum being caught that were in the slot. We did have one red drum that was 26" and one trout about 2.5lbs.
We also used the white "Gulp Alive" shrimp to catch a couple of the red drum and a few smaller trout.
What a great day!!!
The bad part about it,,,,I didn't take the camera. Sorry guys.......................
