Checked out my first handi today
« on: November 10, 2010, 02:21:15 PM »
I went to a local gun shop to get a quote on a handi 308 today and after talking to the guy about it for about 5 mins I looked down and saw a handi sitting on the rack off to the side, so i asid "buddy, is that a handi right there?".... it was so I told him "were you planning on telling me you had one..?" anyway, it was a used NEF handi in 30-06 with a monster Bushnell 4-9x50 sitting hi up on it (not for me I am looking at putting on a 2-7x33 redfield revolution). The gun was in great shape and they were asking $450 (Canadian). I asked if he would sell it without "that telescope" on it and he said no! too bad, i would have taken a 30-06. So I am waiting for a price quote and dealer stock.

The handi seem to have a short barrel, guess i am not used to them yet but was just wondering the barrel length is 20 inches  right? were is that measurement taken from, end to end of the barrel or end of the barrel to end of chamber?

Generally, how are the 30-06's?

Judging by the great condition of the rifle, I imagine the guy mounted that telescope on it, fired a few boxes and was getting the accuracy he wanted so traded it in.

They also had another used single shot break action there....LET ME TELL YOU SHE WAS SWEEEEET! :-* It was custom made (forget the maker will find out again and post it) beautiful, in excellent condition, had two barrels, both had there own mounted Leupold VX1  2-7x33!....(don’t know who had it made but I like his style!) one was a 6mm ,great for varmint, coyote, deer... I like it! the other was a 47-50. I know that is a popular cal here in handis but for me it is a little much. If it was a 30-06 or something a little larger ok, but I have no need to go that big. I would take a moose with my 308 or even a 30-30 if the shot was right. Too bad because i was consider re-mortgaging my house if i had to in order to pay the asking price of $1500 Canadian... if the larger cal barrel wasn't so.....well... large.

However, I liked that gun soooo much I am hoping someone will tell me the pros of that cal and hopefully convince me to buy it!!!
also, what you think about that 30-06 handi.

thanks

The 30-06 has a standard 22" barrel, measured from end to end including the chamber, they sell new for less than $300 here, usually $250-$270 depending on whether synthetic or wood.

Don't discount that Bushnell "telescope".  They work very well.  The lens coating and the 50mm objective lens work great together to put your deer in your lap at dark thirty.  Been there, done that, got a bunch of Bushnell Banners.....and a bunch of deer. ;D ;D

Another thank you for Tim.

The 45-70 can be loaded up or down from factory loads, basically from 45Colt to aproaching 458WinMag on a strong platform. This is to say, you WILL be able to find a light load and a heavy load that suit you. All in all it sounds like a nice package. The hard part for me was breaking that kind of price threshhold, though once I had spent $1K on the first high priced rifle the second was was a lot easier. Now dont get me wrong, I really like my inexepensive 'Handi's' that are doing the job while leaving me more money for pie and ice cream, but I do still get attracted to those pricey, fancy guns.

I hear what your saying, both ways...
I am sure a handi will serve me well in the woods. however, that VV custom is sweet and it may be $1500 but it comes with $600 (Cdn) worht of scopes pluss two barrels.
Anyway, enough dreaming cause its not going to happen. I can get a new handi at a local shop for $320. Cabelas Canada charges $299, but after shipping i am better off buying local and then have the shops support. I am not going to go with that used 30-06 that another local shop has at is $120 more and has a scope and mounts that i dont want.
think i will grab the 308. generaly, how do they perform? I hear the 30/30 generaly perform well and the .243 generaly not well, just wondering what kind of reputation the 308 has.
thanks

Borealboy,
Just ask the guys that are using the 308 (7.62 Nato) how well they work messing up a Raghead's day ;D
They get a lot of Bang Flops in their work! You do your part and the 308 will do its.

I would suggest you take a closer look at that "custom" rifle. It may well be a
Thompson-Center with Virgin Valley barrels. If so, you can swap barrels just like a Handi only at a much higher price. Check out the Encore forum on this site. You would have the option of adding a 30-06 if you so desired and anything labeled Leupold has very good re-sale value should you decide to sell the 2x7x33's.
