My jeep/woods shorties....
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:57:03 AM »
Greetings !
Stumbled upon this article :

http://www.woodsmonkey.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=308:the-12-gauge-uber-tamer&catid=41:how-to-articles&Itemid=63

while researching general survival kit info and thought it was a great idea! So I put together two 20ga (cut to 20")with survivor stock and a 12ga(cut to 18.25 which is too short) with the conventional stock and "storearm".The Maxpedition shotshell holder slides into the stock perfectly and I keep some misc survival goodies in the forearms-matches,LED light, ferrocerium rod, compass, tinder tabs, and a couple extra 7 1/2's.I plan to re-finish the two 20's with Brownells Alumahyde II in dark parkerized gray and my gunsmith will be installing some tru-glo long bead sights .

Just wonderin why do you think that the barrel on your 12 gauge is too short? Balance? Also do you have chokes in any of them or are the cylinder? and again nice shotguns!

Thanks

Nice job on the shorties.
I have a 20 and a 12 that are both cut to 20"
The 12 has a 2.5x20 scope and the 20 has fiber optic sights.
20" is about right as far as length... any shorter and they don't balance right.

I love H&R shorties. I have 5 myself...1 .410, 1 20, 3 12s. I use both the Survivor buttstock and the conventional synthetic. All have the Stor-Arm forearm, however. Fun to build 'em. Go to Walmart, get an H&R for $117....and go from there!

Mine were all local pawn shop finds ...walked out with my arms full of single shots for around 250.00. One was heavily painted in "Bubbaflage" and one had some rust -but they cleaned up OK. The chokes were removed with the 8 inches of barrel so they're just straight tubes--the 20's both shot 3" slugs to "minute of pumpkin" accuracy at about 50 yards-without any sights, but using my son's young eyes.He said 3 slugs from each gun was plenty! Can't wait to p/u a cheap airbrush from Harbor Freight and spray on some duracoat...

Here's a couple more pictures...

Awesome rigs.  I just created my Jeep gun without seeing this post.  it started as a $30 yard sale pick up.  16ga iver johnson.  it has a 20" bbl and is coated in stove black paint.  I have since made a leather sling for it that laces with stiched shell holders. I did all the conversion work myself.  8 years as a Navy Gunner's mate. I love the way it handles shooting and in and out of the Jeep.  I got a shotgun scabbard from Sportsmans Guide that straps to the cross bar in the Jeep.  I just picked up a 12 Ga to make another one.  The ammo will be easier to find for the 12.
Happy hunting!

Since the 12 is too short, how about putting a Poly-Choke on it? Should come out about right and you can dial in whatever you need.
