locked up rifle
« on: November 13, 2010, 07:51:05 AM »

I have a Handi rifle fitted with a 223 barrel. Have about 5000 rounds through it since I purchased the gun about three years ago. I was shooting at targets and after loading a round I cocked the hammer and a hear a clink . the hammer became loose in the cocked position and I could not lower the hammer or break the barrel open. So now i am stuck with a live round in the chamber and no way to get it out. What do you suppose happened and how to I get around this situation?

It's happened before! IIRC it's covered in the FAQs!!

I would disassemble and make safe. You have broken parts Brownells can book you up with replacements.

CW pointed you in the right direction, most likely the transfer bar(lifter striker) broke, you'll have to knock the lower frame pins out to remove the trigger guard and trigger parts, then you can open the action to remove the live round, see the trigger hone links in the FAQs for instructions on how to R&R the parts.

I managed to break the barrel and remove the live round. The hammer is loose and dangling. I will look at the faqs. Thanks for the tips fellows.
sounds like this thing might end up at the gunsmith.

If the hammer is loose, either it's broken or the hammer spring broke, I would suggest a Wolff extra power replacement spring instead of the factory spring, link in the FAQs. H&R will repair if for nothing, give em a call Monday and see what they say, they may even cover return shipping if you ask, they do that a lot, toll free (866)776-9292.  ;)

Single coil, the double coil will only work in the old Toppers with a half cock notch hammer and no transfer bar unless modifications are made.

Best price is direct from Wolff, see the FAQs, a 5 pack is $20, shipping is real reasonable.  ;)
