I'm contemplating a custom Howa or Remington based rifle in 257WM. Anyone have anything good/bad to say about it? Thought about a 25 WSM, but it might be kind of a hassle forming brass, etc. Thanks for input!

the 257wm is one of the finest 6mms ever made,having said that i think that you may want to check out winchesters new super short magnums.
you can get two choices at this time,
wssm in 223 that is faster then a 22/250 or the wssm in 243,around 200fps
over the present 243.they come in win#70s.

I have a custom 700 LH in 257 Wthy Mag with a 26" hart barrel. I have shot deer and coyotes with it for 10 years. It shoots like a string, hits hard, and nothing walks away. It is not a hide gun on coyotes but you don't lose any. I shoot Nosler 85 grain Ballistic Tips over Reloader 22 in the 3750fps neighborhood.

A 6mm is .243 caliber while the .257 Weatherby Magnum is .257 caliber.

You don't state what you plan on using the .257 Weatherby for. Hunting, targets, etc.? For hunting purposes the .257 Weatherby is very capable of taking non-dangerous game up to and including Alaskan Moose. It's a little over powered for varmints but it can be down loaded to work for even them. Point to watch, my .257 Weatherby doesn't like loads that are cut down very much. Accuracy goes out the window. Lawdog

This would mainly be for Whitetails in TN where I sometimes hunt clearcuts where you might see a 250+yd. shot. Might take it to CO for Mulies. Might also try it on local coyotes. I have an Encore and I'm considering having VVCG build the barrel for it. They have already done a 270WSM for me and it's simply wicked. Truthfully, it's just another un-needed toy...

I think I'd go with the Remmy action. It is a smoother all around action.
I have a 257 built on a mark X action and a 27in hart barrel. one hell of a cal. Make sure that you have a gunsmith that is used to working with Weatherby cal. because if the chamber is too tight you will flatten primers with factory ammo. I will tell you factory is plenty hot. I tested some norma 100grn. loads at 3614 av. I think thats hot enough. I'll stop rambling. Great cal. you will love it!!!!!!!!!! :mrgreen:

The .257 Weatherby will do what you want it to do with no problems. The velocity is really not needed for the ranges you describe, but it is the flattest shooting factory cartridge you can buy unless the 30-378 shoots flatter, but that is a whole different level of cartridge. You'd be well advised on a 26" if you want to see what it will do. In a shorter barrel the advantage over a 25-06 is not too apparent. Make sure you use premium bullets with this round, if you get a close range target you will need a good bullet to ensure it doesn't blow up on contact. I shoot a .270 Weatherby, which is based on the same case with .02 more bullet diameter, might be another option for you to look at as it offers more bullet weight for larger game but doesn't seem to have much more recoil, it feels like a 30/06 or 7Mag in similar weight rifles. The .270 with a 130gr bullet will do anything the .257 with a 120 will do. Don't pour rounds through a hot barrel with this cartridge, you'll likely see your barrel life suffer quickly if you do this.

If your handloads can beat factory ammo by much you are probably loading to unsafe pressure levels when it comes to Weatherby ammo, not to be confused with Weatherby loadings by other cartridge mfgs.

i seen where they are making the 257 wby in the Vangurad i have been wanting a 25 cal now i can get the one i want i can use it for coyoes or deer will these be the one's that they sale at Walmart VM

That will be a great! Maybe just junk the stock and get a nice one from Boyd's. Can't beat that deal for ~$400.

Yup since I saw they were coming out with the Vanguard this year in this caliber I've been doing some checking around. Been wanting one in SS with the gray laminated wood stock. Boyd's has that stock they call it the Pepper laminate for the Vanguard for $136. Add that to the cost of the SS Vanguard and I'll have my long wanted .257 Whby. SS with gray laminated stock for a nice price. Will have one this year almost for certain.

I was chomping at the bit for the Vanguard in 257, but it only has a 24" barrel. A little disappointed, not too much better than 25-06. I may just bite the bullet and buy a 7mm Rem Mag Howa barreled action and have it rebarreled with a 26-27" Shilen. Maybe put a Boyd's stock on it.

In barrels of equal length (24") the .257 Whby. still beats the .25-06 by 300 fps in every bullet weight. Even more with the 120s.

I have a 257 wby. mag with 26" barrel, mcmillen stock scoped with a leupold 3.5 by 10. I live in the south west and do some antelope hunting
and the 257 wby is just the ticket for this, A lot of the shots are going to be in the 200 to 300 yard range if not more and i don't think there is a better cal. than this, Some one mentioned about short loads for the 257 wby , don't do it, you will not have very good luck with short loads.
This case was made to blow and go,, Long range is what the 257 was made to do and it does it just fine. thats my 2. have a nice day and keep your powder dry. Joe

Needless to say but the .257 Weatherby Mag is an excellent cartridge for deer size game. I've taken whitetail and antelope here in Wyoming with mine and it's been very effective. In my experience reloading for this cartridge it responds best to maximum loads. Mine is a Mark V Euromark and it didn't shoot very well when I got it. After glassbedding and floating and adjusting the trigger I tried various loads and all shot well when loaded to max. My present load is 70 grs. ReLoader 22 and a Nosler 115 gr. Partition which groups three shots in 5/8" at 100 yards. :wink:
