Son needs new gun
« on: December 28, 2010, 12:19:16 PM »
ok, bought my son a handi rifle (youth model) .243 about 5 years ago....then added a 20 ga barrel.  even though it has a mc stock he put down a lot of squirrels with it......now he has outgrown the youth model and i was thinking of getting the frame fitted to a .308 or something else......Question that i may know the answer to but i want the handi experts opinions on this........if i send it in to get it fitted for new barrel thats aprox 100 bucks plus he's gona nned a new stock....thats 35-50 i am guessing plus then i am going to have a hard time selling the short youth .243 barrel and the 20 ga barrel, so it seems like  it would be best to sell whole outfit to some one with a child and start over with a new rifle..........any thoughts...........thnaks for any replies ..mack

When you consider the real cost of an accessory rifle barrel of about $150 after the cost of shipping both ways and paying the fitting fee and tax, buying a complete rifle definitely has it's advantages.

Unless you are strapped for cash I'd consider keeping it and having a new barrel fitted to it.  Buy a used stock from the classifieds and you are good to go.  He'd have a shotgun, a .243 for varmints and the new barrel.  I guess I'm saying that you could have 3 guns or sell it and have one. :o

IF the 243 is accurate I would just buy a used adult stock set off the classifieds.  Then he will still have his rifle/shotgun combo and if  you sell the youth stock set you will not be out much money.   Of course the laws of being a Handiholic apply, so you have to buy another Handi even if you don't really need one. ;D

I would feel hypocritical offering advise on this one, as I started out upgrading a youth 243 a few years ago, and now have a closet full of Handi's and daily peruse the classifieds "just in case".  As of now, I need another SB2 frame, and one of those rollover stocks from GSI, and a few dozen other trinkets.......it never works out evenly. :D

In truth, you should look at the idea of fitting a barrel yourself, and finding one on the classifieds, and then you would have a nice combo.....

I would add an adult sized non- monty stock. That would fix the shotgun side of things and if the youth 243 has open sights the non monty would work fine. And look for a used barrel that has sights AND a scope rail so he really does feel he has options. Unless he just plain wants a different gun, then your kind of stuck.   thejanitor

Just buy a new rifle and keep the youth model for your (later down the road) Grandson.

What Tommie D said.

Get him a 30-06, a gun he will be able to use for life, anywhere he goes in North America.  I live in Alaska, and the 30-06 Handi is my go to gun year round.  Yes, it's killed Grizzlies and Moose, plus Whitetails in Tennessee.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

IMHO, keep it, get a non-MC c/w recoil pad off the classifieds and have him use it like that for a season while you shop for another 'bigger' centerfire.
The older I get the less I'm inclined to carry rifle weight over the trail, and a bunch of guys here bob them or go to the light barrel models too. I suspect that later on he will love still having that rifle with all its memories.

My oldest grandson is growing like a weed and had pretty much outgrown his youth .243, so I bought a Pachmayr slip-on recoil pad that added 1/2" to the length of pull.  Just right for one season.  I'll be getting him a new rifle, and the youth model will be handed down the line to #2 grandson and subsequently to #3 and #4 when the time is right.

+1  for Brewster!!   I still use my old 20ga I got for christmas 20 years ago, now it just has a cheapo slip on recoil pad duct taped on.  (those elastic shell holders on the stock cover the tape)

No need for tape with the small-size Pachmayr.  Very snug fit.  Put it on right over the stock recoil pad.  With a 7 year spead on the 4 boys, it will be a good return on investment.

I think it is an Ohio law that all breakopen shotgun must have duct tape on the stock. ;D  Gotta come clean, I put camo duct tape on a beretta autoloader so I could turkey hunt about 10 years ago.  As long as the gun shoots straight it don't matter what it looks like.

My reload/gun room has been named the "Possum Lodge" by my wife.  I don't mind because she doesn't have a nephew named Harold. ::)

I've never been a good economist, so ya probably need to take this with a grain of salt.  I'm also a hoarder and a scrounger.  I keep a lot of stuff I don't see a near future use for.  That being said, I'd shop the internet and buy a complete rifle, pick up an adult stock here in the classifieds, and keep the youth stock for a kid down the road.  If you buy a non-factory fit barrel, you may have to modify the frame.  If you do, the original barrels won't fit properly.  A new rifle isn't too much more than factory barrel, and you have more bang for your buck.  All the above is how I get in trouble with my wife from time to time.
